I know right.

Who the hell comes up with these stupid names. Last thing I want is an amp called an asshole, pussy, or satan. :jerkit: :jerkit:

Exactly!

than actually playing?

I came to realization a while back that I was spending more time looking for my "next guitar" than actually playing.

Even now, as a dad with a 1 year old, I have some nice gear, but I don't get to play much(when the baby is sleeping only). If I get 30 min a day, I'm happy!!!

Of course, it's easier to find time surfing the web... so I find myself looking at gear more.

How about you?
I'm am in the exact same situation, although my children are older. I think I am definitely becoming more knowledgeable about gear and less knowledgeable and capable in my playing. I desperately want to spend more time playing but it gets more difficult by the day. That said, at times it does make the time I get to play quite enjoyable.

Guilty. Totally resemble this post. Only time I really play anymore is a week leading up to a show or to learn a new song for our set or for the every once in awhile rehearsal before a show. Never really play anymore just for the enjoyment. Pathetic. But I got some nice gear!

I've noticed about this forum that if you post a thread about music either a band or song that the thread usually sinks fast if it's not related to Van Halen or Jake E Lee. Or if ignites a flame war, see Avenged Seven Fold thread. I post about new stuff I hear about and the threads get maybe 6 - 8 replies and that's it, but the latest pink vagina or deep brown asshole mod get pages of talk about that missing tone that has eluded guys for years.

        "deep brown asshole mod"

I have painfully noticed this as well. I practically begged everyone here to checkout our new single a couple of times and got crickets.

I have tendency to look up gear more than play. I really need to go through some modes again with a metronome and I have been putting it off for like...10 years.

Yeah, same for me. I have more time to surf around the web than to actually play guitar. I'm lucky if I get an hour or 2 a week.

People spend way too much time analyzing products and tone from YouTube. Lets make a decision on a product by watching an audio/video source compressed way down from the original file for YouTube where end users typically are listening on cheaper, non studio grade speakers ;) We hear people make decisions on speakers, pickups and whatnot solely based on youtube clips.

Forums also keep folks from playing where majority of the time is spent talking about it versus doing it....we hear terms like open, lush, organic etc...WTH does this mean? Shut up and play my guitar is where I'm at :)
There it is!

It never ceases to amaze me when I see the minutia that people will discuss from clips or vids that are wholly sonically inaccurate.
I see people discussing stuff every day that does far less for their tone than a 1/2" difference in mic placement.

My audio and video demos sound exactly the same as the amp sounds in the room from all angles and all distances with the purest of ears. True story. Please make a note of it.

Yeah, but you're special

I am at a place I can buy gear, and even have time to play. If i feel like playing for 4 hours on the weekend, I ge my earplugs out and do so.

Funny thing is that I have too much gear.... Definitely...

But I have been hearing these great Bogner Ecstacy clips....

It's just 3K....

I've gone the opposite direction. I got a $200 gift card to my local guitar shop last Christmas and was excited as hell to go spend it. I must have walked around that shop for better than an hour before I left without spending a dime.
There was simply nothing there I needed. Not a damned thing.
I think I'll use the gift certificate for buying gifts for my musician friends and family members' birthdays throughout the year.

Guilty. I've finally stopped buying amps for a while after settling on my Chupa and Langner 800 for a while. Guitars still come and go at a regular pace tho... LOL.

Not much for me to research anymore. I know I want a SLO and an AD30 and a few effects (Strymon Timeline, El Capistan-Maybe Mobius) and another GE-7.

Have 3 guitars...Want a new (never mind bought it Gibson 2014 in Sea Foam  ), another Tele and Strat. :D

well to be fair you can get the basic jist of the tone from decent quality audio files. I know your clips that were on the Bogner site way back ended costing me up some coin because theyt kept haunting me   Still have a 101B and 4x12 too.

I just picked up a cheapy Zoom Q2 HD recorder...sounds pretty good in MOV's but bet ti gets hammered on YouTube.

Totally with you Dan. I don't think about amp acquisitions anymore. I would like to get a Cherry Bomb sometime soon but I only think about guitar buys now (adding to the family, not selling or trading). I know what you mean about the threads. I used to get two pages easy on my clips. Since I went with a Kemper I am lucky to get 10 replies. I'm sure if I was using the "flavor of the month" amp I wouldn't be able to reply enough. Oh well! I am happy with my tones and guitars and don't spend a ton of time surfing gear anymore. It's nice being satisfied because I think my playing has gotten better and I am saving money. BTW, I am typing this from my iPad on a Maui beach right now.

I am guilty of that. If I spent the time playing rather then checking out forums and such my chops would be killer.

I see guitars, amps and everything between as artwork. I can browse through a guitar magazine/catalog or store for hours on end. Takes me to my happy place.

Out of pure laziness I'd say I spend more time looking than playing most of the time.

Indeed the case for me also.. Yet here I am.
