Exactly what I was going to say brother.
As a general rule of thumb when attacks start to smear, it's time to back off if you want a track to retain some sort of articulation in-the-mix.

Type O Negative as an example has tone that is scratchy and over-gained as fuck, as a tone it’s horrible… but in the context of what they do, I wouldn’t have it any other way and love it
