Got probably about $2500 into everything.
Bastid
..and its the best sound I have had to date!
That's seriously awesome! I only have $2000 into amps at the moment and have one of the best sounds I've had. Lots of monies into guitars though. Pedals too.
Dude.......I had well over 100K into a guitar collection...never played them.....sold it all off about 10 years ago.
Now just have about 2 guitars and play the SHIT out of them!!
MUCH HAPPIER!!! :D
Simpler is BETTER for a rig....
Yeah I mostly play my Strat >cord > into a Mesa or 20th A. XTC A touch of verb and done. So realistically I could nock it down to 2500-5000 …..Damn if you think about it :scared: still a lot

Lucky man. So you'll have an unbiassed opinion, are the claims of it being the holy grail legitimate?

It is nice. I would rather have my '79 for pure playability etc...

i could have bought a new corvette, but it wouldn't bring me as much joy.

Ya, for me it was a Ferrari or the rig. The rig has paid for itself w/ gig revenue, and provided MUCH joy. A Ferrari still beckons me though. Maybe next year.

Definitely. I think, "well I could in reality get down to...." but even when I do that, still, so much money. But as we've said, there is much worst out there to spend your money on. Also a lot better too though.

As I expected-nothing particularly magical.

I've always lusted over your '79. Something about it just oozes mojo.

lol, I was thinking the EXACT same thing. That's c6 z06 money!! I disagree with you though, I think it'd bring me quite a bit of joy..

but okay, okay, okay, if you have vintage guitars then fine, I can see $40k+...

even if I had to buy racks/cases for touring, a few more guitars, and additional equipment I would bet I still wouldnt break $15k at worst

Ultimately, the cost is all relative to the individual's circumstances, and cost/benefit priority. If someone can get by w/ the hand fart tone in their fingers, OR whistling Dixie great for them w/ no additional gear necessary.

It reminds me of a friend's aunt saying re: the cost of a Lamborghini, "you'd have to be pretty stupid to pay that kind of money for something that just gets you from here to there."

In response I said, "I don't know too many stupid people in a position to purchase a Lamborghini. Still, for those types it isn't ONLY about getting 'from here to there', rather it's about HOW you get from here to there-- and in that idea lies the difference, to those willing to pay the premium."

Sure, a beach cruiser can get them from here to there too (They might even have one of those too), but when the Lambo (OR Big Rigs) are what you want, then it's nice to have that option too. ;)

to an extent, I mean if I had vintage gear from the 50s, 60s etc (especially guitars), I probably wouldn't bring them out on tour in fear of them breaking or being stolen.. They would stay locked up in my house in a fat safe. That lamborghini on the other hand... :D

One thing I have done is my dad gave me one of those really heavy duty gun case type things that he used for our old larger video-camera (circa 90s) and it had that foam insert where you can punch out squares for things.. I cut a piece of heavy duty plywood to the exact internal size of it and said to myself if I can't fit my pedals on that board, then I have too many. I've been pretty good at sticking to that and keeps atleast my pedalboard small (<$1100ish). The case is watertight, road worthy, etc so it works out well.

I always look at gear as tools/resources.

Players who gig live (Touring pros, Cover bands, etc...)
Players who used to gig live, but still play for the joy of it
Basement players
Collectors

They all have various preferences and requirements, and the vary from simple to wildly complex. The MAIN trick, as I see it anyway, is finding the gear that works for us. MANY times sure we can get away with using WAY less but then there are times when just getting by isn't the point. Anyway... IF, anything worth doing, is worth doing well... Then we should use the BEST gear we can to get it done, because settling for less would be less. NOW, that isn't the same thing as less is more. Keep It Simple, Just NOT simpler. ;)

I'm afraid of I add it up I might go ahead and sell the majority of it :) I don't need 5 amps, 5 4x12's and about 20 guitars :) I've tried to get the guitars down a bit but not as much as I originally planned. I'd like to get it to may 6 guitars and 3 amps and 3 4x12's

Any of you guys that have a lot of gear and gig out - make sure that your insurance policy covers it. State Farm shit a brick when I told them roughly how much gear I had and that I gigged. Ended up getting insurance from this place in Nashville that covers tours too - say Brad Paisley slams his hand in a car door and can't complete a tour, well, there is insurance for that.

It's not cheap, but hell, neither is my gear. I have an Excel spreadsheet listing all my gear (that needs to be updated) with serial #s and approximate replacement value. I'd advise many of you to do the same. Even if you don't have insurance that will cover it, you still have a record of serial numbers and can track down stolen gear.

Pete
