How much of the pot shaft should poke through the top of a Les Paul?

I got this Legend Tone 50s wiring harness with the copper grounding plate and I'm trying to test fit it. With the washer/nut off that goes on the outside, it adds enough flexibility to fit this thing in and get all 4 pots poking through the top. Is there a standard length of shaft that needs to poke through the top so the knobs will fit and look factory? I can fiddle with the star washer/nut underneath the copper plate to space it away from it to have more or less poking through the top. A standard measurement would be much easier than a TON of trial and error lol

As long as you can get the nut on some threads it’s probably far enough. All that matters is it if works. If you have the knobs you’ll find out soon enough. If it looks good to your eye, it’s good.

There is a lot of variation of the carved top. I just screw around with it till it looks and feels right. I tend to like the knobs a bit high.

Yeah, I care more about how the knob feels to use than how it looks. Speed knobs still work fine close to the body but top hats I find easier to use if they got some space.

What model Gibson les Paul is it and what year is it

Ive always bought the long shaft pots.
They need to get thru the maple cap.
They have two nuts so you can adjust them right where they need to be.

It's not the size that counts. It's whether or not you can use it. If it gets the job done, it's long enough. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I think generally long shaft pots are recommended for USA LPs and short shaft for historic LPs. Beyond that, I think you just adjust to your preference.
