After watching him at the RnR HOF anniversary concert that pretty much sums it up beautifully. I can't believe the guy who plays the solo's on the first three records is this same guy. Just listened to Kill 'Em All recently and he rips on a wah on that record. Very tasty and good tone. He's always used the wah but he actually used to have great phrasing. It's like since the 90's he's trying to be a great classic rock lead player instead of a metal lead player. He just doesn't have the "swing". There's no blues in him.

thing is... alot of those solos were mustaines....i still love him and metallica...saw them this year and they were great...

Yup, Mustaine did write the Kill 'em all solos/songs, but Kirk redid them to a point while keeping them similar to what Dave wrote. thing is... alot of those solos were mustaines....i still love him and metallica...saw them this year and they were great...
Also agree that it seems Kirk has long been on a blues rock kick as far as soloing, and he really doesn't pull it off that well much of the time. I don't want to knock the man's playing too much as he and James were huge influences for my playing back in the day, but for bluesy phrasing I think James is better than Kirk. Kirkster is good at a particular style of metal playing, but when he tries to get to bendy and soulful, it often sounds like poo. But he's rich and I live in a tiny house with a guitar rig jammed into a small living room next to my daughter's toys

I got to go and meet them (Metallica) backstage at Roskilde Festival once. Really cool guys. There were hardly anyone around, and they were just normal cool guys.
Kirks guitar tech gave a tour of his gear and a look at the view from the stage area... wow 70.000 people look good! Anyway... Its just unreal what he has back there! Refrigerator racks just lined up... It was brilliant.
So... show started and we went out into the crowd to watch it. Then Kirk unleashed his wasp-attack! My goodness it was terrible! All that flippin gear, and then wnnnnneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
I left 2 songs in when my headache arrived.
But some people really like him... I just dont. No harm intended.
