MXR 10 band EQ in the loop. I like the amp without it, but it wasn't until I got the EQ that I truly loved it. It seems to take an EQ better than just about any amp I've tried as well.
Edit: also, toss a Tung Sol in v1. And I've tried a lot of tubes with this amp, and it just seems to love Mesa/Ruby power tubes for whatever reason.

Bro...help us help you lol. For real tho, the right combo of volume, pickups, and speakers, and its a solid combo, modded or not...my other guitarist records and tours with a metal band on victory records and uses a 5150II, emg loaded ibanez sz, and a mesa cab. I think he still uses his decimator, but that's it...

i'd vote for a c26 and c22 mod off the bat...huge differences..esp if you put the mod on a switch.
otherwise, you're limited basically to boosting and eq'ing in the loop, or pre-input eq.
