Hum, noise coming thru the power to my house to my amps.

Awesome post, Jimmie.

I think the issue here is that Gsxr (nice bike by the way, used to ride one!!) never used to have the problem, and now he does. Correct me if I am wrong here, Gsxr, but that's what's causing the consternation, yes?

As for the drive by... I can just see it now. Lowered blacked out Cadillac, bandanas, barrel sticking out of the rear window, slow down, squeeze one off, and light up the tires.

All for a hit on a transformer. We could make this into a rap song. "The Fuzz" as opposed to the "police" could be a simile for your amps "white noise". Hell, even "white noise" could be nicely incorporated into a rap song about making the transformer "a mark". You know folks, I may have to run with this on my own...I hope you don't mind. This is excellent fodder for my bent mind :D

Stay tuned for the lyrics...

have you lift the ground on your amp? Also it could be your guitar. Are you using the same guitar through all of this?

Dude, Yes, no and no. It happenes with no input plugged into the front of the amps.

What causes the humming in audio systems ?

Audio and video systems need a reference point for their voltages. Generally referred to as common or ground, although it may not be actually connected with the earth, this reference remains at "zero volts" while other signal voltages "swing" positive (above) and negative (below) it. Physically, the common may be a wire, a trace on a printed-circuit board, a metal chassis, virtually anything that conducts electricity. Ideally it should be a perfect conductor, but in any practical system it is not. As the complexity and size of the system is increased, the imperfect conductivity of the common (ground) conductor inevitably causes problems.

Hum and buzz (50Hz/60Hz and it's harmonics) occur in unbalanced systems when currents flow in the cable shield connections between different pieces of equipment. Hum and buzz can also occur balanced systems even though they are generally much more

The cable shield currents and ground voltage differences are caused by several mechanisms. The second most common source of hum and buzz is the voltage difference between two safety grounds separated by a large distance or the voltage difference between a safety ground and an "Earth" ground (such as a grounded satellite dish or cable TV source). This problem is usually called "ground loop". This is the most common one in severe humming problems.

Hum and buzz can also be magnetically induced or capacitively induced directly into signal cables. Or the noise current can leak from mains input through capacitance between the A.C. power transformer primary and secondary windings which causes that a portion of the A.C. line voltage will ALWAYS be capacitively coupled directly to audio circuit ground. This capacitivly coupled power line signal will usually contain significant harmonics out to 1MHz or more. These signals will cause currents to flow in the cable shields thus adding this noise directly to the audio signal.

Thanks for ther input Jimmie. But as Mr.V stated it just recently has started up.

I am getting a hum mixed with a white noise coming thru my speakers when on clean or lead channels. It sounds like the ocean is coming thru my speakers mixed with a hum. I have noticed it on the Peters and Diezel. It started a couple weeks ago and was never there before that. At first I thought it was something in my signal chain, I unplugged everything and went straight into each amp seperately, noise still there. I also moved an amp to a different location in the house using a different speaker cab and cables. Noise still there. I have used multiple outlets with the same outcome. I also noticed that the noise is there when no instrument is plugged in and amp is off standby.

I have eliminated it as being my gear and think it is the house. The house is only 9 years old.

Any help or suggestions would be great. This is really starting to piss me off.

Thanks
That sucks man, did you track down the problem

Not yet man. I got busy and could not rob my neighbors power yet. :D

For sure, let us know what you find with the neighbors. If the electric company won't change the transformer, a good .306 slug will kill it dead and they will have to come then. If 3of you are tied onto one undersized transformer, it could cause the problem, as electricity flows in both directions. If you plan to stay in that house, you might have the electric company give you a price for isolating you on the grid.

Steve

Will do Steve. Haha, yeah. I could put a 12g slug into it. I think I would want to have the trajectory originating from other than my house.  After I "borrow" power from either side I will contact them.

It would have to be a drive by!

You are correct in the fact that my problem is as of recent.

I put the GSXR750 and the Hayabusa in my name just to confuse everyone. I had both at the same time so it seemed to make sense. Even though technically the Hayabusa is GSX1300R. :D Both bikes are very fun and the Busa is just sick in the acceleration department.

Dude, you could make a fortune selling your ideas to an up an coming rap artist. ;)

:D It's cool. When I bought the thing new the salesdude said be carefull 80% of the guys never make it home without crashing.  I guess because of the horespower and torque dudes would just light it up and let it rip without taking into consideration a brand new rear tire needs to be broken in (get all the new shiny slick shit off of it). Also most guys would go from a 600cc bike right into the mighty 1300cc. The power delivery is much much different. The Busa will light up the rear tire pretty effortlessly.

See, that wouldn't be the problem for me, it would be trying to figure if the Swing Arm would be the best place to mount the Nitrous bottle. When placed in situational dilemmas such as this, I try to remind myself of the Nietzsche quote: "If you stare long enough into the abyss the abyss stares back" Or put differently, life comes at ya fast, especially on a crotch rocket....

I had a GSX750R, probably the best stock bike I've ridden - perfect balance of power, weight and handling. I'm a tall dude, fairly big, 600cc bikes just bug me. Anyway, traded that in for a ZX1000R, totally tracked that out with a Power Commander, full Ti and carbon fiber exhaust, race electronics, everything... 186bhp on the dyno. F*ckin' ridiculous. Managed to pin it up well past 300kmh a few times while riding certain stretches of BC highways. Never had a fall, never fucked up, never did nosies to get the looks - I pinned it when the roads were open, hot and clear.

Then one day on my way into the interior?? Up and over this mountain pass, TOTALLY cautious, hit some grit and sand at, what, maybe 45kmh tops?? Got highsided and knocked me senseless for months, along with a broken clavicle. Speech impedement, everything. I'm fine now, but under STRICT Dr's orders, try to refrain from anything that could result in another bonk to the head. I've got a ridiculous number of concussions in my medical history due to my preference in sport (extreme skiing and DH mountain biking).

Needless to say, no bike now that I'm a dad. But I will get a Harley simply to cruise on in the next few years :D

V.

PS - oh ya, NOT to hijack the thread, let us know what the hell's going on with the hum/hiss/white noise Gsxr!! And as for the rap song, it's a work in progress!!

What I was hoping to do was to share a way of looking at the circuitry a little differently. A low resistance short between the neutral and common for instance, might not blow the circuit breaker but be problematic just enough to create an unbalanced power source? This could happen in different ways, a power cable staple that finally worked its way through the shield, a defective device plugged into an AC outlet, no offense, but maybe a rodent chewing on wires in the wall? Damn Flying squirls

Maybe its a connector in a junction box, routing grounds back to the box that was insufficiently crimped and oxidation between the wires finally opened the pathway to earth?

I'd get one of those AC outlet checkers that show faults, or a good multi-meter to check resistance between neutral and ground, (make sure the breaker is off though)

If all else fails, call an electrician.
Good luck bro....

Then all you have to worry about are the PCB laden fluids leaking out of the Transformer that have a volatile half-life of something like oh, forever, the liability from the Power Company pinning it on the last person bitching the most about "bad power" as the most logical suspect, the insurance company investigating the claims the back EMF caused you and your neighbors connected to your Trans, losing all of your highly prized electrical appliances

As fun as popping a cap in the transformer's ass might be on the front end of things, I think I might still call an electrician, but I do crazy things like that sometimes....

Damn! That bike sounded sick. That's a lot of power. Yeah my Busa mods = full HMF exhaust with carbon fiber cans, modified air box, timing retard eliminator, Yoshimura tuned injection, up 2 on the rear sprocket, MPS quick shifter (basically a momentary engine kill wired up to the horn button for full throttle upshifts). I was running 9.60 (corrected) times in the quarter mile on street tires, no wheelie bar, and no extended swing arm......... It's a drug in its self. I have had it to an indicated 200mph (320km) I would like to do a turbo Busa someday. :D

I have high sided it once. Fuck that hurt. Luckily it was cold as hell and I was wearing my full track leathers and full faced helmet. Otherwise my face would have been fucked up.  Thank God for good gear.

I love all bikes. I have had Harley, Buell, Ducati and Suzuki. Bikes are cool.
