What can I say, other than it's absolutely amazing. Best cleans I've ever played, and with a boost I'm getting modern metal tones that rival my Avenger. The feel, the clarity, this thing is just dripping with tone.

I got it for a clearance blowout price of $999. Regular price was $2500. I had store credit of $25 so the amp actually only cost me $975...killer deal.
The store simply doesn't carry Budda or Peavey anymore since the chain was bought out by another company. So I jumped on it.

It's got four JJ 6L6's and three 12AX7's, 2 Rubys and 1 JJ.
The amp loves V30's so my Mesa cab has been getting a workout. This is by far the loudest amp I've ever played too.
Setting the Master above 2 is suicide. Seriously. This thing would drown out a garbage truck.
Clips to come.....!

Nice. That's a sweet deal! $975 is a good price for a used one never mind new!

Wow, can't go wrong at that price which is under cost! SuperDrive is on my want list , probably the sd30 head.

Yep you stole it. If you decide not to keep it you will find somebody here who will give you your money back for sure.

Congrats!

Great amp. One of the finest all around rock amps I know of. Congrats and enjoy.

Congrats dude... that was a price too good to pass up!

So is that Mesa cab traditional or Recto?

Congrats, that is actually better than the deal I got on my SD30 Series II a couple months back and I stole that! I know this will sound crazy but try a trio of Sovtek 12ax7wa's in there or a wb for the 1st slot. I tried literally everything in mine and those are what the amp was designed for and work the best. Couldn't agree more about the tone to me it's the perfect amp. One of these days i'm going to run down another one because it's tough wanting to play anything else at this point :)

Nice, I had a 30 & 45 and they both rocked. I bet the 80 is a beast.

My favorite thing about that amp is that it's everything you need, nothing I don't. I don't 10 channels, 17 modes and umpteen different modes and voicings.

Thanks guys, I'm loving this thing. It really can do everything. The clean and dirt tones are just Godly. With a boost it just breathes fire. I like that there doesn't seem to be too much of any particular freq, or too little. No harsh highs or boxy mids, no muddy lows either. Everything just translates so nicely out of the speakers with this amp.

Vrad, thanks, that's a Trad. size Mesa cab. It sounds great with V30's, but I may look for another Greenback loaded cab purely to combat the loudness of the amp and the high efficiency of the V30's. Something in the 96-98db range instead of 100-101db's. We'll see, no rush on that.

bigangry, I've done a little bit of tube swapping. But nothing has sounded better than the stock setup. A JJ ECC83S in V1 and Ruby HG 12AX7ACR's in V2 & V3.
I only have Sovtek LPS's on hand, no WA or WB's, but I will look into getting some.
Like you, I think I'm going to have a hard time playing some of my other heads after being spoiled by this thing...

I definitely liked a friend's SD45 much better through my V30 bogner cab than his budda 2X12 with their own budda phat speakers, was way too bright with those IMO. That one was LOUD too.

Killer deal! i bet it's a beast. I've never played the SD80, but remember playing a SD30 at Sam Ash and loving the lead & clean tones. It had a warm, woody character to the tone I really dug. The feel was awesome & it cleaned up great.

Any other tube suggestions? Mainly power tubes?
The JJ 6L6's are sounding good, but is there something else that really shines in this amp?
What about boosts? It's been liking my 808 but still have to try out my OCD.

Congrats!
Great amps, with a great voicing...as close to perfect for me that I have found.

I experimented a lot with power tubes...everything from new stuff...GT and Tung Sol and whatnot, through NOS 6550 and 7581A, various 6L6s, and never landed on anything better than what were the stock (at the time, don't know about now) "Chinese 5881". They were $40 a quad so I wasn't about to argue with that.

I did end up putting NOS Mullards in the pre which was an audible improvement over the Sovteks. But none of the power tube experiments ever showed much.
