Bro you should be paid by amp companies to come up with these slogans hahah :hys:

Absolutely loved the tone from this amp ever since i first heard it! I spoke with Mike about this and have seen what's going on under the hood too. I gotta say Mike never fails to impress me with his ideas :rawk:

sweet! harmonically rich like a NMV cranked up
That's exactly what it is although The variac gives it that extra kick in the ass where the amp distorts like a bastard!
That is only 2 gain stages but it feel like 4 when you are playing it. Although my 72 with a plexi spec Dimed gave me that harmonic complexity, it does not distort like this. Now I know why VH was able to get his amp to distort like he did :)

I insist that it's YOU who owns!!!

What i really love about that amp is the hair around the notes.. It's got that growly, ever so slightly fuzzy edge to the tone which sounds amazing!

That is awesome - tone and playing. The bad thing about a variac is that you end up screwing with the heater voltages too - I'm wagering that this amp just drops the B+ voltage and leaves the heaters and such alone. I'd also bet the phase inverter section is distorting too. Whatever it is, sounds AWESOME and I'd love to have a Marshall modded like this.

i think this is something else, all that variac stuff has been done before. this sounds like a slave setup almost.

you can run a variac between the amp and cab too, I never tried it but I think I will get some cables made up and do it.

Unreal!!! Fantastic tone, killer harmonic content, and a player that brings it all out!!!

Let me know when this is available. I want one. I'm all about that tone all day every day!!! Where do I send payment??? lol

fuck yeah..that sounded incredibly close man.....it has that clean sound ring, but the dirty "thing". i love that tone.

I am much more into poweramp distortion than preamp ... I would be very into this...:)

All I can say is WOW!! That amp sounds amazing and you can tear it up!!!

Dude, Ralph.

Dude..

That seriously sounds so good.

And your playing is awesome. Kinda sounded like Eric Johnson and Mr. Scary were fighting over that amp.

I agree. I love the throatyness of it and the hair around the notes and the Harmonic complexity. I could live with the amp as is but some things about it would not fly for some people, so It's going to be 100% before it is ever released !!

Thanks brother (Happy Birthday BTW!)
The way that Mike has the electronic variac installed fixes the short comings of using a plug in variac!!
He is a madman I tell you. If and when he gets the time we already discussed some ideas of how to make it better ;)
I'm not sure if we will go forward with this but judging by this thread, I think that he should!

The electronic variac is what's giving it that sound and I agree 100% with is sounding like a slave rig. The amp only has 2 gain stages but when you hammer it with that variac, the distortion and harmonics goes through the roof and it makes the amp very easy to play which surprised me. it really is something and it's one of those things that you have to try

LOL!! Id love to get these out there. It's funny because when Mike and I spoke about something like this, I started to second guess myself and wonder if anyone else but me would want something like this hahahaha. It's one of those things where you just don't know but I'm happy that others dig it! All the best!

Very Cool Stephen!! I'm onoe of those guys who likes both as long as I get a sound that I like... But I think you get more dynamics/overtones from the poweramp being worked!!

Agree ... I use both style amps. Besides anytime you are using a tube amp you are blending preamp (distortion) & poweramp (overdrive) to some degree. Even a amp like a Blackface Fender Twin if put on a oscilloscope distorts the sound more than people realize. I am pretty sure none of would be here if not for distortion.... :)

If Randall / Fortin produced something like this at a real world price point, they would have a super-ultra-mega HIT! AWESOME clips! That is THE tone.
