of a '69 Plexi, modded SD-1 and a GB 4-12 cab. Seemed like a good time to fire it up and see if I still liked it.

and here is the same track with my Metal (no SD-1 though)

They sound kinda close to me..... :)

Stellar! The first clip sounds great to me... Would love to hear the lead tone... Didn't bother downloading the second one since you said they were close...

Steve

Awesome! They're pretty close, but I prefer the Plexi. There's something about Wizard clips that I could never really get into.

Liked the Plexi clip more. The Wizard was clearer sounding but the boosted Plexi had more teeth.

Thanks Steve. I did mess with some lead stuff but it was horrible playing. That's next though. The Wizard is a bit more up front, not so soft.

I still prefer the Wizard, I like the snarl and punch it has. A little scritchy on the top, I used the built in boost which adds a bit of that. Normally I leave that off. The Modern sounds closer to the Plexi though.

Thanks for listening Jim. The Plexi is good at that tone, but no loop, clean etc...a little soft in the attack too. BTW: I used the VM 50 at practice the other nite...had the master on 10, detail @ 3:00 body @ 10:00

That '69 Plexi clip sounds friggin great. Love the year and the number itself
Yeah...its been a good one. I think the trick is the power light mod, its the nose from the game "Operation"

This plus the wizard seemed to me to be a bit 'thinner' sounding.
That Plexi clip was
nice

Could you expect to get that type of sound from a JCM 800 2203, boosted?

To me a JCM 800 will have more lows and low mids than a Plexi.

The Keeley SD-1 pedals are the shit!!!! I love them with Marshalls.

I've not been able to get the 800's to sound as smooth / thick. It must be the transformers. I've modded 800's the same way I did this plexi and they are not the same. Don't get me wrong, its close but just not the same.

I'll have to do another try with the Wizard and not use the boost and also one with the Modern.

I hear you about the loop. That is always one that makes or breaks a deal for me is that effects loop, gotta have one. I've still been more than pleased with the Egnater but I've been itching to get that old vibe Marshall again, like a Metro clone or something with a few extras. I went ahead and ordered just the basic SL module to use with a boost instead of the higher gain ones I have, just to see if it cures my GAS   I just bought one of Keeley's new stacked SD-1 pedals today, should be here next week. I picked up a stock one a couple days ago and I just want to compare them both.
I'll have to use my Modern next time, it sounds alot closer to the Plexi clip and I get that sound live, with FX and a clean. That was always the drawback with the PLexi...good distortion but that was it, then slave it for FX and a add a JC120 for clean...etc etc....I heard Buckeyedog's Egnater build amp, it was nice.

Maybe the new 800's are different. I'm used to the older ones and they were pretty light in the lows. But so are stock plexis....

As long as I'm not in the mood for something modern the VM does EXACTLY what I want from a Marshall. I use the SD-1, gain on 0 level all the way up. Because I typically play at lower volumes I used the Mid Boost switch in. Steve Dawson(VM designer) said to watch using the bass and Body as this switch uses a lot of the same frequencies. So I typically keep the body at just under 9:00. But yeah, the VM has grown on me. Ashame I can't let it spread it's wings more volume wise. It does sound great cranked up. At the GC I had it dimed for about 2 minutes and the one sales person was looking at me like " hey dick could you turn it down" After a few VH, Dio and Ozzy riffs I did turn it down. I just had to know.

George, I got a Mod 50 now too! It's really sweet! I'm loving it big time. Amazing versatility and tone.......crankin' that master up really works on the Mod 50 as well. Was just downstairs with my LP and Marshall 412 w/Greenies, EG5 module and master at 3:00
It was rockin' baby :D

Oh, Don, let us know how the SL works out for you.

The Plexi clip was great, I preferred it over the Wizard clip. The Wizard didn't have the thick snarl that the Plexi had.

Is the loop really that important? :D

And I want dibs on the Metro clone when you sell it!!!! I suggest the Ralle specs :D

Both sound great.

Just curious, which amp is louder? The Plexi or Wizard? We all know the Plexi's are damn loud, but i keep hearing that those Wizard's are beyond loud!

I think both sound excellent, great recording, what is your setup?

For this style, I think the boosted Plexi just takes the edge, personally, I like the Wizard more, it is less gnarly which I prefer.

Love that tone man. But I have to agree with the masses, that Plexi sounds amazing.
