At the moment, I only have a DS-1 and an SD-1 for boosting. I only tried the the SD

I plugged it in front of my Mesa rig and my 5150 and really liked it. I wasn't sure what I'd think and I was very surprised that I liked it at all. It was friggin' magic. But...

The SD-1 kinda tightened up the fiddy and the Recto, but not enough. In the end, I ended up not using it. The boost was just too messy. Maybe I am not using the right pedal or not using the right one correctly. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Gawd! I remembered why I loved my 5150 and why it's so widely used for metal. I haven't tracked with the Mesa rig yet, but hands down the fiddy sounds the best yet out of all the stuff I tried before pressing record. Something tells me the blend of the Peavey and the Mesas will be the final recorded tone... but we'll see. I found myself really GASing for something much tighter like an Engl. Again, I welcome your suggestions.

I know I have been promising clips forever, but they are actually, finally, comming soon. As soon as I find some tones I am not embarassed about. I hate being a perfectionist... Here are some photos.

OD808 + 5150 =

I prefer boosting the lead channel instead of the ryhthm channel, but both sound good. I would usually have the gain around 1.5 or 2.0 on the lead channel with a boost in front.

I liked the ryhthm better with and without the boost. I used to be a lead channel fanatic. Since I loaded up the preamp with Tung sols... the lead channel 'aint the same. I haven't gotten around to changing the tubes to retest.

You can see my settings fairly clear in the last picture. How 'bout the whole EQ at 7???

What OD808 do you reccomend?

Back off the gain on the amp when boosting... that should help any messiness you're experiencing. Keep the drive on the pedal at zero or very low too.

I find boosting actually makes my amps more articulate and ALOT tighter.

I used my Plank Cranker for the first time a couple days ago (had no DC adapter) on my rig (see sig). When I kick it in the VHT goes from what it's known for, to a more saturated chunkiness, which is good for some, but I just can't seem to get into boosting. I'll just keep it for a long ass time and X years from now, sell the Plank Cranker for thousands, and buy a new amp.

Everyone is gonna have different settings, but for me having the bass and resonance on 7 is too much. I also usually kept the mids around 4-5 as well. Maxon OD808 modded by LordOvChaos FTW.

I hope your not adding any gain to the boost, if you do that just calls for disaster and a big nest of bees

Nope... Gain zero, Level max.

I wouldn't max the level on the OD pedal either. Half or 3/4's for the OD pedal's level is better IMO. That way the pedal doesn't comsume your amps preamp tone too much. For the SD-1 I like to have the gain dial on 1/10.

I've got a LordoVChaos modded SD-1 that I run in front of my Rectoverb and it really brings the amp alive.
I used to boost my 5150 (when I had it) but I always used the lead channel (I used the rhythm as a clean).
I put a tung sol in v1 and low gain JJ's the rest of the way and it cleaned up the sound a lot.
If I recall I use to run the gain on the lead channel at around 4 and set the level on my boost to 4:00 and the gain on 7:00.
it sounded great for an Arch Enemy type of tone.
