I finally understand why people say V30s have a funky mid sound that is very harsh

This just popped up on my YouTube, and I tend to like Ola's video, so I gave it a shot. Even though it's a different cab, so that has some flavor added, I can now say I understand why people hate the V30s so much, but so many metal guys love them. That was the nastiest, harshest fizz I have ever heard, while the Greenbacks sounded glorious, even with his lower tunings and heavier riffage.

I will say, though, that mixed together, they produced a pretty good sound.

V30s always just work in a mix.

Depends if you're a guitarist playing by themselves or in a mix with other instruments

FWIW, I find that the M65 Creamback brings something to the table in the midrange department that really balances well with the V-30.

That - and, if you can find the ‘Marshall’ branded UK V-30s, they do have a smoother, fuller midrange.

Never base your opinion on the tone person X,Y,or Z is getting through a miced cab on a youtube video.

What matters is how you can make something sound after making all your own adjustments to the many factors that proceed what that mic is picking up, not to mention ola probably always uses some degree of post processing.

IMO V30s are far from a troublesome speaker model.

I’ve literally never heard anyone say a v30 is scooped sounding….ever. They are 1k city
I heard someone describe them that way. In a way I get what they mean. Compared to something like an F70 from Fane, the V30 sounds almost like it only has mids around the peak, and the rest are scooped out.

I think they sound scooped too. And abrasive in upper mid to high. But they can sound good in a mix for sure.

The V30, more than any other Celestion(imo), has so many different versions that it really depends on WHICH V30 we are talking about. That 2205/10, will sound glorious with the first ever V30s, the 8 ohm 80s Marshall Vintages. Vs the first non OEM regular V30 from 1989-1990s that you could buy off the shelf, that went into the Fender Tonemaster cabs, they are horrible imo with Marshalls EXCEPT for a Jubilee.
But at the same time, ANY version V30 will sound great with Mesa, Diezels, Bogners.....
Mesa OEM, Marshall Vintages from 1991 on, they are also different flavors of V30.
Bottom line, amps are picky sometimes about speakers, and vice versa. That's why these forums are so helpful to give advice on what speakers go well with what amp, etc etc.

Ola should dial in his sound on the v30s too and see how it it sounds in the greenbacks to be fair…

Treble is very impressionable. If he started out with the V30, you might say the GB's sound dull..
GB's are shriekingly bright at low levels and need the volume to get the Cone moving for that woody tone they are known for.
