I had an epiphany about AI and musicians who use it extensively.

So I had an epiphany while listening to the 14th version of AI slop that a "music fan" friend sent to me today on facebook messenger. "hey man, check out my version of SRV playing Cocksparrer's "Runnin Riot" - aren't I clever hyuk hyuk"

"Hey check it out, I made an irish punk song with massive production and traditional instruments about the local venue"

"Hey Dan check it out, a lounge version of "Mommy.....Can I go out and kill tonight?"

Even though all the advertisements for Suno and whatever else sell AI as a "songwriting tool", neither I, nor any other songwriters I know (and I know a shit load of them) have used AI in that way.

It's literally just a way for everyone too lazy to learn or put in the work to play, record, and write to be like "ha ha hey i'm basically on your level now thanks to technology!"

This is it boys, basically everything we've spent our lives striving for is meaningless because people want slop and they don't care that it's slop :dunno:

In a way, this was already happening with the modernization of metal and rock (it all sounds like basically AI anyways, including all the youtuber guys you guys post)

And this just makes sense for why everyone is accepting of the bland, uncanny valley AI garbage

Every person who is super into music thinks their taste is supreme, so why WOULDN'T their magical taste provide the AI with the BEST prompts to make the BEST music?

I try not to think about AI music. I will always enjoy, learning, practicing, playing and recording music, that's has brought more joy to me than any shortcuts and I would not want to skip it.

I kind of think about it like people that get free money or get a gift they did not work for, they do not enjoy it or appreciate it as much as if they would have worked for it. It's hollow and people who write prompts to create music are missing the main part of the joy of making music. So I feel bad for them more than anything, they're missing the best part.

Kind of like a gamer who plays all the time and makes it to some high level of the game and wins. It would not be the same if they just started on the highest level and won it easily. The journey and everything they went through is the fun part with a sense of accomplishment at the end.

The only AI I could see myself using would be drums just to help a song along. If I were to ever seriously record something, and I haven't written or recorded in a long time, I would use a real drummer. I look at it as a tool to keep me playing at this point which I have not been doing at all.

I'm just gonna upload the paper I wrote a couple of years ago; it's not worth reading, but I did just tackle this topic from an academic/research standpoint. I went in with the notion of "this shit is evil and I don't want to be replaced," to "oh yeah, I can definitely see how AI can be used beneficially."

I'm with @Findthetone1 - the AI "songwriting" found in some of the DAWs can be helpful for sussing out ideas with real musicians, but I'd never release a record with AI drums.

AI makes the average person a song writer in the same way that the iPhone made everyone a professional photographer.

Here's my take... the value of music died in the early 2000s. Napster was the opening salvo. These days, music holds no real value to the average listener. Right now, AI is a novel thing. A record company can pay one dud to sit in the basement and generate entire albums without the risks associated in signing a band. These days, all you need to have a hit song is a laptop and a pretty face to dance to whatever "music" you generated on said laptop.

Garbage in garbage out still holds true here, despite the differences in methodology and irresistibly alluring low effort/high reward driven results. That brings me to the biggest issue I have with all this and that is I fundamentally believe that art shouldn’t be this easy. Because making art difficult, laborious and time consuming is what separates those who have something to say with those who have nothing to say

That barrier was already broken with easy to access digital amp sims and recording software tbh though, this just makes the barrier even MORE nonexistent

Who cares about AI-"Music"?

This is why I only make music for my cats. They won't question my integrity. Though Rambo has been looking at me a bit differently. He's a good boy.

My real fear in releasing my music online is that in the near future when inevitably, my social credit score dips below the threshold, and the Tesla T100 killbots come to eliminate me, they’ll be playing an A.I. mashup of one of my own songs combined with some artist I really hate. My last few moments on earth will be hell.

im just gonna keep writing music and recording live with no editing as i have been doing, but then afterwards i want to tell the ai to give me an album from a band consisting of Jimi Hendrix, Jack Bruce, John Bonham and Chris Cornell singing, or whatever random group, and enjoy that too.

You're joking....but you honestly shouldn't be, considering the direction the world has moved in the last few years

AI is tempting to use though because I have many "works in progress" sitting around and the reason they're not fi wished is because I can't figure out how to bridge certain gaps and glue specific parts together to make everything seem in place. In other words I am stuck and would be pretty curious to see how AI could "suggest" me bridge these gaps. Although I would never use it exactly how it would do it, I could use it as Ana idea that I can then alter it. But I'm too proud so I have to finish it myself!

Everyone who writes music has a ton of "works in progress" like that.

It's part of writing man. You'd be cheating yourself out of the reward for coming up with a way to glue it together.

Eh, I'm not afraid. The cream will always rise to the top, but there could be less cream in the future. I already ranted about that in another thread.

I am actually flirting with the idea of laying a vocal track down and then putting into AI to give me an amazing rock singer so my project sounds like what I have in my head. For that, I could see it have a use. But I agree we have already pre-AI'd shit with excesive samples and time aligning drums so it won't even sound that different to us.

Live performances....thats where its all going, localised nostaligia gigs.

(which is in essence what a night out at the orchestra is...)
