How about this one, when you talk to someone and the item you are selling is the item they have been chasing for literally years, and they tell you they have less than your asking price, but that is the guitar/amp they have lusted after for many years and this is there one chance to get it. So, you feel bad for them and you sell for less than your asking price to help a fellow forum member out. After all, they have been trying to get it for years. So you take a hit and sell it to help them out. Then a day after they receive it, you see they listed it on another site for hundreds higher than your original asking price!!! That sucks!! Turns out the entire time the guy was blowing smoke up your ass trying to get you to lower your price anyway he can including acts of subterfuge!

Got suckered.

Selling gear these days is like walking through the shower at the gym. You can't avoid the dicks.

I've had it happen with a particular member on this board.

LMAO! Good saying there.

I got a good one...not craigslist or selling, but a local guy had a "Go Fund Me" set up for medical problems with his family. I donated...as did others, 2 months go by, and I see on facebook their big NAMM trip and his wife scored him a new custom axe.

Let me guess Incaroads

Nope. I'll give you a hint. I was selling my Bogner Uberkab.

There's a special place in Hell for people like that.

Devil's Advocate:

People list used gear at unreasonable prices. For example, I just bought a used guitar. I first shopped around at retailers for a new one. And was quoted $2,750 shipped. Whereas, people are listing the same guitar—used—for MSRP, which is $3200 and change. And when I made an offer that is reasonable for a USED guitar, they freaked because they thought I was low-balling them, when in reality, they just don't understand that nobody wants to pay MORE for a used guitar when a NEW one is cheaper.

One guy told me he paid $4K for it and would in no way ever sell it for less than 3K. Dude... it's not my fault you got ripped off. Nobody is going to buy a $2400 guitar for $4K...

This happens a lot. I see people asking more for Les Pauls than they were knew, that are less than 5 years old. Even the prices on GC Used are all over the place.

Yup. I get it if it's a rare item or it somehow appreciates in value (which is rare). For example, a first-run PRS Modern Eagle might be worth a little more now than when new since they don't make 'em anymore and they are sought after. Granted, the guitar I was looking at is more of a boutique hand-made instrument from Europe. So they are somewhat harder to get here. But still... when a store is willing to sell a new one for $X, don't be surprised when nobody wants to pay you more for a one that's 2 years old and gone through 3 owners.

On the other hand, I got offers on my Peters GNL that were like $800 here on this very forum lol...

When a buyer/seller disappears of the face of the earth after going back and forth.

My personal favorite is when they finally get you to a price everyone agrees on, have you check the shipping to their address, request your Paypal and then nothing. A week later after 3-4 emails unanswered, they send a message that they "pulled the trigger" on something else. Douchebag 101

And you see they've logged on so they most certainly read your PM.

Totally true! I sold something for a great price to a gent as I wanted to move it quickly as I needed the extra funds to secure something that I have wanted for a long time. No worry there. He gets it and compares it to something else he has and then declares that he hears a difference and would sell it. Personally, I think he needed to get his ears checked. I offer to buy it back from him for the price he paid plus the shipping costs so he wouldn't have to worry about moving it.

He ends up selling it on the forum for $200 more than I sold it to him for.

I get the whole free enterprise thing, but that was just plain dirty pool if you ask me. I helped him, and I offered to buy it back and pay the shipping back to me. He had specific guidelines for how he wanted to purchase the unit and I helped him out with that. Felt bad for the gent that bought it but I just let it go. Not worth the time I would take to call him out on it.

I hate it when someone inquires about a guitar that's not ever been listed for sale, agrees a price, asks for a bazillion pics (of an immaculate guitar), and then says the asking price is too much. If you just want pics of the guitar so you can make a replica, or use them as your wallpaper, just fucking ask. Dangling the carrot of a potential sale is just BS..

I just price it higher than I need. Make an offer, you will probably hit my number.

Ok $1100 for the Friedman Smallbox you're selling , sound good ?

To the OP, maybe your guitar is overpriced.

Probably not. I always check market value before posting items for sale... And not just what other people list them at. I base my pricing on items that have sold

I had good luck on Reverb. Most quality items sell the same day or within 3 days, where th same items sit on the forums for weeks. I had a Mesa cab listed for $350. Guy sends me an offer for $50. I never responded. Waited a few days and sent him a $50 offer on an LTD he had listed for $400.

We live in a Pawn Stars, American Pickers world where everyone's a haggler. Wheelin' & dealin' isn't the problem though, everyone loves a bargain but some lowballs are flat out stupid as posted above. Not hard to walk away and never give it another thought but it's a pita since we want to deal with folks that appreciate and understand what something is truly worth and is on the level about paying a fair price. Too many expect a giveaway as if you're geeking and need some quick cash.

One of my biggest annoyances is when someone contacts you to send something urgently so you make extra effort and cost to get it to them ASAP and then they decide not to be in when it arrives on the day they've asked... then proceed to get salty with you.... even after showing them the tracking that a delivery was attempted and it's sitting at the depot.... they still are pissy they didn't get it on the day they wanted

Selling on guitar forums is a thing of the past, I'm sorry to say it but...Too many umm..kids..on em nowadays

I've been meaning to try Reverb myself. A couple of forum pals have advised me that they've had success via Reverb as well.
