...that sound in my head. That sound you think you have but there's still something missing. Well got that shit and I right about fell over when I did. Installed a quad of 30-year-old G12-65's in my Bogner cab and cranked up my Chupacabra and VH4. Chupacabra sound vicious and snarls. Great, perfect pissed off metal tone right? But still not quite modern/saturated enough.

So plug into the Diezel. Channel 3. And I do something I've never done. Mids and treble maxed. Bass almost off but the deep and presence up pretty high. with master just before power amp clipping and channel volume screaming.

Holy fuckball all over your face it Sounded so good.

I've never heard a high gain sound that was so clear and defined with so much low end, yet it was almost like a violin when I hit chords.

I don't know what it is - eq settings, the speaker change, the room, my guitar - but it was like a tone orgasm exploded and the gods of rock looked down and were all "fuck yes that is the shitright there."

Dry yourself off dude

There are a few that swear by these UK made 65's. I have yet to try them though. Some describe them as GB's on steroids. That's a good thing

Steve

The speaker change definitely had something to do with it. I've been using Greenbacks in the Bogner cab up until this point. I love GB's. They are pretty mean when it comes to heavier tones. They have a really nice snarl in the mids and the highs aren't THAT harsh compared to V30's or G12H's. But they are still only 25 watts and have zero low-end. The 65's (mine are original UK ones) are very similar. They don't have as much of a snarl and lack some of the GB's upper mids. But the highs are rolled off and they have a tighter, more pronounced low-end. Plus, they can handle way more power and don't break up as much.

At first, I actually didn't like them. I was about to pull them out and put the GB's back in. But I gave it another chance. And I just had to mess with the amps' EQ a lot to find that sweet spot. Overall, they're a bit smoother than the GB's. But because they can handle more power, I can run the amps hotter. And WOW Fitness, they're awesome!

So yeah, "GB on steroids" is accurate. But they're a little darker and smoother. Overall, a fantastic speaker and probably one of my favorites to date.

Congrats! That doesn't happen too often and to too many players.

ha! I don't have a kid. I borrowed one for that photo. Oh wait...

Stoked you had that experience....but I love how the 65's are now the vintage, holy grail speaker. I remember when they were the stock speaker in 800 cab's and I just hated them, much prefered either greenbacks or G12H30's from 70's cabs. Oh how the world turns.

It's just that moment when everything seems to work perfectly.
Unfortunately you won't think it's perfect too often from tomorrow going forward.
Your ears will find fault soon enough. You can only hope the sound will settle in at 90-95% satisfaction!!

Until then
I love it when you just feel that satisfaction. It's just so inspirational when you're playing. Congrats.

That seems to be the case with me. I can get 90-95% satisfied. Then I let the 5-10% get the best of me and try something new. I'm at 95/97% satisfied with my Surreal Atomica right now. Just trying to dial in that final couple percent, really think I'm going to get there or at least closer than ever before.

grats

i've heard good things about the 65s as well, not a common speaker, i've sort of wondered why V30s seem to have taken such a dominant place in the cab market, they're like a selling point for the really cheap cabs 'with v30s' zomg , and a lot of the pricey hi-end cabs be it engl/mesa/orange etc.. all use v30s, would love to try them out at some stage

good luck not messing with the settings anymore =) and merry xmas

You guys like eating babies, too?
Well, what else would ya do with em??

As to the OP, sounds like a moment of sonic perfection - nicely done. Maybe lay out the EQs for us just to see what you were mussin' with if you have the time. Glad the 65s killed it.

In the meantime, happy non-xmas for you

I had that moment the first time I gigged with my Mark III. Finally got to crank it up and OMFG! It's a beautiful thing \m/.
