I just joined the Wizard family...

I picked up a Modern Classic and played it for the first time today. I'm trying to familiarize myself with all the push pull options that affect the gain. After hearing that these amps are very bright by nature, I was suprised to find mine was not really that bright at all. I'm used to much more with my JCM 800 2203. Overall its pretty cool. I will get some new preamp tubes to see if it will brighten things up a bit. I think it has JJ's in there now... as soon as I find out where to find a square head screwdriver I'll be good to go! btw its black and gold.. belonged to brad and todd prior to me.

Congrats on the Wizard. The crushing low end is amazing on these amps and I find the clean channel is a great platform for pedals. What speakers are you running through?

Hey,.. I'm using vintage 30's and it sounds great as far as low end... maybe even too much low end. The power tubes may be gone i think. it seems a little too mushy a times. In the videos shot at the NY guitar show etc steves amp has the bass and mids almost full out... this has too much bass at 12 o clock so I'm thinking the power tubes are gone. What are you biasing your amp for regarding current draw? 30-32 ma?

Shouldn't be mushy, SED that critter up and melt faces!

Also it should be on the bright side, maybe the tubes? That's why i love the Wizards, pretty bright, but also have bone crushing low end.

I know, Ive heard! If I need any service it can be done here in the US anyway. Looks like its built to outlast me so we are all probably good to go, for the long run.

new power tubes sound great... bottom is tight and less loose!

I run a variac at 117 volts and set my draw at 30ma. using JJ-34s. My tech told me to run at 28 or even less if I was running 120 volts otherwise the JJs would not hold up at that plate voltage.

Yep, I was thinking 30 ma of current draw would be an acceptable number...

Wellcome to the family yes, mine is also bright but this is the reason I like. Once you find your sound sure will be your favorite, I spent a lot of time to find what exactly want, now, some years after ...I looking for more gain, so will buy a Modern Classic II probably.
