I like the EVH Balance tone way more than 5150 tone live..

Since the joint is running slow I will taske this up another notch..........Balance tone for me is better that VH1

Yeah....that will get this place moving :D
I like the tone on Balance a lot and it really isn't hard to get (the main ingredient is Eventide micropitchshifting and I find the SLO100 cops the amp tone nicely), but I certainly prefer the VHI and VHII tones to that tone... and I prefer the music on everything from '78-84 BY FAR! Sammy Hagar writes some of the lamest lyrics in the history of rock...

I could care less about lyrics...give me a good melody and lyrics are not a factor to me.

Agreed!

His best Marshall tones came from Women and Children First and Fair Warning.
Disagreed! VHII was his best tone ever...

Lyrics are a factor for me. I'm not gonna stand up there and play music with lyrics I hate. I had a friend who's band played great original music, but their lyrics were horrible. One song featured the lyric - "She's in the back seat, she's ready for meat." The rest was similar. I'm sorry man, but no way would I stand up and play with someone singing that moronic crap. Sammy Hagar is similar IMO...

I don't like the music as much on Balance as I do earlier Halen either, as I said...

To each their own. I'm all about the music...which is probably why I hated most of the 90s because of nirvana, etc...boring, doomy, gloomy garbage.

I love the tone of that album!!! D. Jams you've got to try an SLO.

I have no proof but I would bet bookoo bucks that the album is SLO. Yes I am a Soldano fanboy but it has alot to do with this album actually. I've just convinced myself over the years that this is fact. Why...

#1 All the 5150's I tried; while very cool, I liked them..did not sound like that album.

#2 Ed still used his SLO's live for Balance Album tour...well documented.

#3 in Nacho Libre voice...I'm a little crazy.
I don't know if the album is SLO, but it is easy to get the Balance tone with one as long as you have an Eventide H-3000. I was getting it in spades with that rig. Easy tone to get IMO... sounds really nice and massive, but you get sick of it after awhile and want to return to something more organic. At least I did...

Hagar's lyrics for me were always so lame. For example, I dig playing Black & Blue cool groove to that tune, but everytime I start singiing along to it, I want to

A kazoo sounds better than that.

I love the Balance-era tone and the Human's Being/Respect the Wind tones, too! That sound
he gets on "Don't Tell Me" and "Amsterdam" is awesomely huge.

Any Peavey Tubefex or Transtubefex will cop that general sound (though no comparison to the SLO/Marshall through a H3000 detuned).

"The Dream is Over" off of F.U.C.K. is one of my favorites, too. That's the Suhr preamp, I think.

However, I agree with sah5150--VHII was the best. "Light Up the Sky" is the VH grail tone AFAIC.

I liked Eddie's later tone better than his earlier tone when I was younger. As I got older and listening closer to things I began to realize just how special Eddie's earlier tone was. His later tone might be cool, but his earlier tone had a character and complexity to it that few others match, including his later tone. To each his own though.

I was just listening to VHII earlier this week.

Do you know the Balance album much? Curious about your thoughts on that. :)

I think the plexi came back out of the store room for a couple of tunes on Balance. If you listen for it you can tell which ones it's on too. But there's too much effects on it to get the fuill tonal effect of that amp.

Would you stand up and play if the lyrics were "He's in the back seat, he's ready for meat" instead?
Perhaps if it said, "The Don's in the back seat, he's ready for meat!". Otherwise no...

Honestly VH never really interested me. I have a few records, but the songs and playing overall were not that interesting. A few songs here and there I like. Most of it is just too pop oriented. At the time they were popular I was more into heavier, progressive stuff.

There is very little I like.
