I like the EVH Balance tone way more than 5150 tone live..

Since the joint is running slow I will taske this up another notch..........Balance tone for me is better that VH1

Yeah....that will get this place moving :D
A kazoo sounds better than that.

:D

Do you know the Balance album much? Curious about your thoughts on that. :)

George's love of everything brown is very well known

Honestly VH never really interested me. I have a few records, but the songs and playing overall were not that interesting. A few songs here and there I like. Most of it is just too pop oriented. At the time they were popular I was more into heavier, progressive stuff.

There is very little I like.

I don't want to derail the thread but I think that RR's tone on the Tribute (live) album is one of my all time favs!! :inlove: There are times I think his Marshalls are seriously going to blow up being pushed for every last drop of tone. There's a spot during the "Don't tell me what love can do" solo by EVH on Balance that gives me the same chills. But the SLO wouldn't blow ;) well maybe a power tube and fuse...

:D

I love the early VH tone, Fair Warning is my favorite album. Honest I have not listened to Balance that much, the production is good, but I prefer 5150 or For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge to Balance.

My favorite VH tone was off the F.U.C.K. album. Followed closely by VH II. His tone on songs like Judgement Day and Dream another Dream are my favorites, period.

Speaking of VH 1. My ipod was in shuffle this morning and it happened across Jamies Cryin'. As much as that song is overplayed on the radio, I took a hard listen to the tone. My god. His amp sounds blistering on that one, but at the same time it's articulate as hell when he plays those d inversions or whatever they are.

Lyrics are a factor for me. I'm not gonna stand up there and play music with lyrics I hate. I had a friend who's band played great original music, but their lyrics were horrible. One song featured the lyric - "She's in the back seat, she's ready for meat." The rest was similar. I'm sorry man, but no way would I stand up and play with someone singing that moronic crap. Sammy Hagar is similar IMO...

I don't like the music as much on Balance as I do earlier Halen either, as I said...

Steve

Would you stand up and play if the lyrics were "He's in the back seat, he's ready for meat" instead?
Perhaps if it said, "The Don's in the back seat, he's ready for meat!". Otherwise no...

Steve

Yeah Steve. Sammy's lyrics are pretty bad and thats a big let down for the chickenfoot stuff.

I actually like VHII tone better than VH1.
Agreed!

His best Marshall tones came from Women and Children First and Fair Warning.
Disagreed! VHII was his best tone ever...

Steve

I went back and listened to all of them after reading this. First, I admit Van Halen is not on my current rotation (I just don't listen to them as much as I used to). When I do the '78 to '84 era gets 90% of the listens. WaCF sounds good but not like I remembered. Not bad but not my favorite. Maybe has more to do with the production. VHII is my definite favorite. Forgot how much I loved Light Up The Sky. Great playing and killer tone! Fair Warning is very close behind. Fair has some of their strongest songs ever. That most likely clouded my judgment. Thanks for jogging my head around. :bash: :2thumbsup:

Of course, to each his own, and I think you are a badass guitar player with a great ear for tone, but I can't understand how you can find EVH's early playing "not that interesting" or his tone not that good early on... I can certainly understand not necessarily liking his style, but it was certainly interesting at the time...

Light up the sky is big with me, Fair Warning for the content was my favorite from the Dave years.

Balance and F.U.C.K for Sammy days.

OF course Dave's Eatem and Smile was the BEST album between the two

Take that Mentoneman  :D

"Light Up the Sky" is the VH grail tone AFAIC.
Violent Agreement!

Agreed, but the beginning of DOA is just cooler. It sounds like a massive door with extremely rusty hinges opening :D

For me it's the "You're No Good" tone - "Women In Love" is also insanely good tone! "Jamie's Crying" rythym tones are incredible too.

I am also COMPLETELY in love with "Fair Warning" tone although I'm certain that it's the "darker songs" that move me maybe more...

Keith

when I moved into my house 15 years ago, I got that album from a mail order music company. I suppose the people that lived there previously ordered it and forgot to change the address.

I think the plexi came back out of the store room for a couple of tunes on Balance. If you listen for it you can tell which ones it's on too. But there's too much effects on it to get the fuill tonal effect of that amp.
Yeah...I read that as well. I think 'Aftershock' was the old Marshall...I'll have to grab the magazine next to the crapper and get back to you on that ;)

ok...in Guitar World (Feb '95) it was called 'Somebody Get Me A Doctor', by Richie Fliegler

Long story short... a dutch amp doctor by the name of Peter Van Wheelden restored Ed's old Super Lead. Ed played 3 songs on the Balance cd with it :D

correct

sidenote:
i sent RF a bottle of glenmorangie as a no hard feelings thing after a wicked exchange on the fender page, where I got booted for life for being the first on a cybertwin lovefest thread to slam it on it's initial debut at Namm.

That went well...

Ps

i spent the day at our church helping set up for the Michael w smith concert going on tonight.

Turns out one of the sound engineers toured with VH as FOH engineer for OU812 and Dio for Last In Line and Lock up the Wolves

pics of our event coming...
