I like the EVH Balance tone way more than 5150 tone live..

Damn, even I have not been banned at the Fender page......then again I have no business being there in the first place :D

The LP forum..............now there I am banned for life.

Love the tone from Balance

I could make a reasonable stab at it with my XTC and an Eventide in the loop.

Light up the sky is big with me, Fair Warning for the content was my favorite from the Dave years.

Balance and F.U.C.K for Sammy days.

OF course Dave's Eatem and Smile was the BEST album between the two

Take that Mentoneman  :D

You know it's funny that you mention this, because I was listening to Eat Em And Smile last night ans was thinking that I thought Vai had better tone and tastier playing on that album that VH to that point. Skyscraper is another great disc. Vai was just on fire with Roth. And I like Vai's Roth era tone. It's that classic cranked JCM800 tone that just does it for me.

concert pics

i posted it on HRI because that forum automatically resizes pictures and i didn't wanna edit every one.

the sound engineer i hung with was super cool...we talked about his stints FOH engineering VH/ou812, roth/skyscraper, dio (sacred heart/lock up the wolves), carlton (he toured as foh and engineered renegade gentleman), yellowjackets w/robben ford, hiroshima

what a colorful guitar history!

i learned a few tricks too.

I think the plexi came back out of the store room for a couple of tunes on Balance. If you listen for it you can tell which ones it's on too. But there's too much effects on it to get the fuill tonal effect of that amp.

i read somewhere he only used the Marshall in "aftershock" and "top of the world" . Nothing competes IMO to Halen II, Fair Warning, Woman and Children First ....i do like the tone in "Sucker in a Three piece suit" from OU812 though. even if it does have some swirly chorusing

Sucker in a Three piece suit really sounds like an SLO to me... :dunno:

Just sayin'.... :poke:

Anyone know a close approximation of what he did with the harmonizer on Balance?

He set it for a micropitchshift - +9 cents L/-9 cents R. ~ 250 ms delayed L/~ 500 ms delay R. Completely wet out to power amp and two cabs. Center cab is dry signal straight from the amp. The pitchshifted delayed stereo signal is much lower in the mix. Icing on the cake if you will... sounds massive. The Axe-FX can be set to do the same thing...
