I've tried down half step and more but it doesn't seem all that in tune and to me the sound is not as tight.

yep, been having this arguement with my other guitarist, who want to tune to C.... :gethim:

Nope.....standard for me. period. I did the drop tuning for years, I've noticed since I started tuning things standard that everything is more crisp and defined.

I'm back into it. I prefer the sound to "stay together" nicely; downtuning tends to "add growl" and a lot of times I don't want any more.

And it's not as though a person can't play heavy music in standard tuning. I can see why some would want to use lower tunings, but I personally don't want or need to.

I'm another one of those standard tuning junkies. I used to be a Drop-D junkie until I realized I can be a lot more flexible in standard tuning. The detuned thing never really did anything for me; it always seemed like my guitars were losing their midrange qualities and snap when I would detune them. I'd probably be more likely to play a 7-string than a 6-string detuned.

I should point out that I'm not knocking detuning at all. There are a lot of bands out there I really dig that will detune for some songs and sound great. Of course, they're not nu-metalish Drop-Z kind of bands :P

I tune all my guitars to Drop Z flat. Most humans can't even hear it because it's so low. Only those fuled by satan can comprehend the music.

I like standard and 1/2 step down a lot. I'm a big advocate of Drop D tuning. I like the cool chords you can create and add those low, droaning bass notes too. I'm also known to tune down a full step or two, but I'm usually standard or a 1/2 step down.

I can't wait until MegaMark comes in here :D

I tend to go 1/2 step down, just because I'm used to the feel for bending at that tension, with .10's anyway.

I tune my guitars to Å, Ä or Ö.

Seriously speaking, I've used Eb tuning for long time now.

I know I thought half step down is great and played guitar like that for years... Thought it was "heavier" sounding. Until my friend called me up and said, tune you guitar to standard and play a chord. I did and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Just sounded more in tune or something, like richer...

I use Eb tuning most of the time when gigging and drop the low E to a D once in a while.
That's as exciting as I get with down tuning.

I have no problem with standard tuning, I just prefer low tunings. I just like the growl and how harmonies sound down that low.

+1 c-standard for me. i just like how big it sounds. with the right gauge strings, and the right setup, it still sounds correct. i just tested this with 3 guitars a few weeks ago. one standard, one c-standard, and my old seven string. although i liked it in standard, c was way deeper, and sounded better with my style.
the seven string was just monstrous, and had so much low end with the same settings.

Since I am now in a blues band it is all standard tuning for me these days. I do occasionally play metal though and I have three guitars for this. One tuned standard, one down a half step and one down to drop C or C#, the same tuning SOAD uses.

right now i have

one guitar that goes from d standard and drop c, drop c# and eb, to standard and drop d.

seven guitars in e standard

one guitar in b standard

i really only play 5 out of the 9

I found different guitars sound better in different tunings. The Les Paul I use the most sounds best in standard. {10-52} now that I have played with these strings for years other peoples guitars feel real loose. Almost like springs. My band hated me trying different tunings at first but became use to it. Then I found it sounded best in standard, the bass player thinks I'm nut's but had to agree it had focus, fullness, with out getting loose.

I've been playing std E for 16 years.
Other than the occasional dropped D, i have no reason to go lower.

I like a half step down and drop d most of the time. I use 10-48 and the tone gets thicker dropped a half step. My Einstein seems to like it that way. It's also a bit easier to play for me. I don't have any problems with tuning going out any more than standard tuning.

Open C is my new Muse, my god if you know a tad of theory the results are worth it.

Of course for low stuff I have the 7 and standard E for everythinhg else.....I just use the new 5 string bass for the crush brutal thingies.

I played ins tandard for years, and always said I would never ever drop down at all. A month or two ago I tried drop D, and it wasn't too bad, but with the way I play I couldn't do the same kinds of chords and progressions I usually do with it. Just the other day I took some stuff I had on the computer and just decided to see what it would sound like with a step or 2 down. At first I dropped it 2 steps, didn't really like it at all. Then I did 1 step, and wow it sounded really good on there. So I picked up the real thing and dropped it a step and wow it really does sound good. A little lower without being too low, and still being pretty similar to standard, although it would help if I had a 25.5 instead of a shitty 24.75 scale.

Bottom line, I'm currently stickign with down a step.

That's because it's not. :D

Ideally, you should change string gauges and setup the guitar for whatever tuning you are going to use. Changing the tuning on my guitars tends to completely throw them off. I have them just to where I want them.

I don't see why a 24.75" scale would be "shitty." Not like you're trying to tune down to A standard or something, and you can't fit large enough strings to compensate. Like I said above, just up the gauge of your strings.
