I liked the tone he had at that TM video you shot when he did Lightning Strikes Again but he still used that phaser  I have a killer sounding 70's MXR Phase 90 but I rarely use it, only very sparingly.

He had a good rhythm tone that night but sometimes the solos could have used a tad more gain, the notes would just cut out with a noticeable lack of sustain. Every recent video I've seen he's got that damn phase on. I agree with you 100% on the phaser thing, used sparingly it's great over use becomes as annoying as Kirk Handmit's wah.

hey Mark
what effect are you using on those old Whitesnake clippies. Love aint no stranger?
thank you

i have to disagree mark, nothing is as annoying as kirk hamsters wah. especially the botch playing on top of it.

id never survive a metallica concert - id die of perfect pitch obsession torture, ice-picky tone on top of terrible playing, and over the top over-wah effects

Ya see what happens when you give in to people posting on forums that say you use "too much gain" ....

Let that be a lesson, next time someone says that to you

Just Delay and Reverb.

I used two mics, an SM57 and a Apex 435. I pushed the 435 ahead by about 7 or 8ms to give it some thickness.
No chorus or phase or flanger or pitch detune.

I've seen Metalilica many times, and though not a huge fan I will say they have some killer tone live

The wah is a bit much to handle though

Love your Tone Mark!!

I saw Lynch several times back in the 80's. To me the best tone was when Dokken opened for Aerosmith on the Back for the Attack tour.
It was ripping!!

he had too much chorus going on the night I saw him open up for Aerosmith, I didn't stay for Aerosmith.
That lock and Key tunes he did had alot of Chorus on it.....but when they opened up with KISS OF DEATH...
it was mind blowing.

You might be surprised. I saw them last year or maybe the year before and they were great guitar wise. I thought they were going to suck and KH was going to get annoying but the only thing annoying was James' voice :aww: Kirk was dancing around on his wah all night and it was a mild nuisance , but James' voice is really a far cry from what it used to be, sad really

I've seen him quite a few times...he's very inconsistant. I thought he sounded great on both the Tooth and Nail and ULAK tours. He blew on Monsters of Rock although he had amp problems at the very beginning (Pittsburgh show) that delayed their start by about 15 minutes (after a recorded intro of "Without Warning" he charged out on stage, hit opening chord to the first song and...nothing   )...who knows what he ended up using that day. He sounded great on the first Lynch Mob tour, not so good on the second. Didn't see him again until a solo tour in '05 and he was so bad, playing and tone, that I walked out about 1/2 way through his set. Bummer...he was one of my biggest inspirations back in the day.

No it wasn't, I was there. I liked the opening riff and finally seeing Don walk out with the sunglasses and trench coat on.
Hey........I was 17 years old and high as a kite....
so to me it was mind blowing....

But yes the Trench coat was a nice touch.
While I do think it was a little dark inside the arena for Sunglasses though.

In all seriousness....Back for the Attack is my favorite Lynch tone though. ;)

Yeah I hated his tone when they played Monster of Rock tour. It was just a thin lost signal....
Scorpions blew everyone away on that tour tone wise.
My opinion only. :D

yeah, I don't know why George thinks he's a low gain guy all of a sudden...he's gone into some weird territory these past years

I met the band at a local Taco Bell after the show. They opened up for Loverboy. We left early to beat traffic and stopped at Taco Bell and a big tour bus pulled in and out they came...all except for George  After some autographs I asked if we could meet George and Don said "No, he aint as cool as us"

It's so true! It's like he's trying to cover his playing and ruin his tone
