He used a Randall RG80 on that record didn't he? Along with some sort of Peavey. Am I nuts or didn't I read that somewhere?
On Tooth And Nail, yeah that was Randall.....that's my favorite tones he used, along with the first album....the first Lynch Mob cd was good too.

i may the only one who thinks this, but I actually loved lynch's lead tone on the first record. I think the old German reverb plates in Dieter Dierics studio create that "chamber" like effect that is a perfect tone marriage with a cranked old Super Lead. ..similar to Uli Roth's recordings on Scorps In Trance and Virgin Killer.

I agree. I dig that old tone.
Me as well.....

Listened to "Just got Lucky" yesterday and that little "Soloish lick" that he puts in between the versus....
AWESOME!!!
Soaked with Reverb or something....VERY WET sounding.
But very well placed! ;)

Yup.....read that as well....
I bought one a few years back and it sounded BAD....

I am sure a lot more was involved in that setup. :D

He is regressing as a player and his tone is horrible!

Check him out recently on "that metal show" about 1 minute 13 sec into the program. Worst tone ever!
http://www.vh1.com/video/that-metal-show/full-episodes/slash/1653740/playlist.jhtml And he has the gloves!

I was watching that Metal Show episode and when they said George was the guest guitar player I was like YES. Then after he started playing I was like NO! Is he ever going to rebound :dunno:

My thoughts exactly!

The Last Lynch I bought was the Lynch/Pilson CD...

I actually enjoyed that cd.
Havent bought anything since then Lynch wise.
I want to remember him as the Ripper he was.

I thought that was a very good CD. I just didn't like those dark, fizzy Bogner tones, intro to Beast In the Box for example.
My Favorite song is 'Vaccine' on that Cd...love the Into.
Pilson sounds WAY BETTER then Don Dokken on vocals...

Exactly

You guys ever hear his "Will work for Food" Cd?
Great covers....and his tone was AWESOME ON IT!!
The Panama Cover....what amp was he using? Super tight and Punchy!!

Lets send a request to Friedman to host a meeting with George where we can share our concerns. We love ya George, but.....wtf is up with your tone?

I'm probably wrong here, but I don't think he ever recorded with the Randall Amp .... Wasn't that just the rig he used on the suppoing tours ?

I saw Lynch several times back in the 80's. To me the best tone was when Dokken opened for Aerosmith on the Back for the Attack tour.
It was ripping!!

I saw them in Indianapolis during that tour and they rocked. I was near the stage and after the show Don came out looking for some chick and I told him to tell George he killed. Don looked at me like I told him I just banged his mother and walked away! Ahhh the memories. ;)

You know, I have to confess complete and utter ignorance when it comes to this Mr. George Lynch. Can you believe, I think - maybe - the only recollection I have of this guy, or his name, is maybe seeing it periodically in a magazine or something of the sort... I'm not at all familiar with any of his music - at least to the best of my knowledge. I wasn't even aware of how well professed a guitarist he was (has been, is??) or how well repsected he is amongst the guitar playing crowd.

I find this weird. I'm 40 - I've been plugged into music all my life, er, at least since the age of 8 or so, playing guitar (or trying to   ) since I was 9 or 10, and always always always gravitated towards to the heavier, aggressive, metally styles of music - in amongst the other classics as well (you know, the Floyd, Who, Dead, Phish, Genesis, etc) - such as Scorps, Priest, Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth (mind you, Mustaine's voice was the big turn off for me), and a host of others... I loved Ratt's music, primarily because of DiMartini, I even listened to White Lion and Whitesnake and Warrant and all that other glammy Poison shyte. But it was RIGHT around that time in my life that my music took a turn... Mahavishnu, DiMeola, DeLucia, Zappa, and a lot of alternative stuff around that time too... Then grunge came in, and more alt-metal, and the Peppers, and that whole enchilada - Tool - Soundgarden - you name it. Was THIS the period of time that I missed Lynch??

I don't know - I've just seen a lot of his name on RT as of late and I just gotta come clean and say I know next to nothing about this cat... Secondly, FWIW, I can't say from the videos I've seen thus far that he's really tickling my guitar skill fancy - but I guess everyone in their day, right?? Correct me if I'm wrong...but is the fascination with this cat along the same lines as those who try to emulate and replicate that 'exact EVH' tone?? Cuz if that's what this is all about, I'm outta here. What's been done has been done and is 'done' for a reason. I'm into tomorrow's tone...my own. Or at least into players today that sound unique unto themselves in the context of today's newer music.

School me - I'm all ears (literally)!!

Namaste,
V.

I saw them on the first two tours and he was using Randalls then....anything is possible when recording, but the tones were pretty much the same.

Lynch and the SLO are both legendary. Each will do fine, even with an occasional slag on a metal forum. Good days, bad days, meh... Both have been a part of some kick ass epic tunes.

Long Live Lynch

Just like my OP says.."I love you George Lynch."

BTW I don't think you are accusing me of slagging George.

My favorite guitarist of all time!! I just prefer his tone on UL&K, Back For The Attack and the first Lynch Mob CD's. His tone and playing on the prementioned works are phenomenal.

I hear him get put down on metal forums in this case I am only slagging his preamp (gain) level and his phaser :) NOT HIM! :)

With the current availabilty of video cameras and YT, no one can have a bad night and be safe anymore..lol.
All our heroes have onions on YT, although it shows the human side of everyone, I kinda preferred the "mystique" of guitar heros back before YT.

Everyone has sucked during live shows but we didn't notice as much because we didn't have the opportunity to listen to the show as instant replay. We had adrenaline, excitement and sometimes substances that took us even farther from reality.

I remember the days when you picked up a new record album...you couldn't wait to open it up and see the inside covers...half the time you didn't even know what the band looked like until you saw them live. There's something to be said about the "good old days".

Mark

In no way was I accusing you of slaggin on ole George. It just seems trendy to slag certain players because they have changed over the years or can't/don't want to do all the current fretboard gymnastics. I am not into that. EVH, one of the best ever. New Eddie, old Eddie, whatever.... He has paid his dues and can do what the fuck ever he wants to. George is in a similar category. Santana.... I was never into his playing as much but have equal respect for him. Oh yeah, and some dick wad will have to try and take a dump on Page not playing 'neat'.

And on the good old days.... I can totally relate to the anticipation of ripping the plastic wrap off an LP to get into the album cuts you won't hear on the radio. KISS Alive I, the cool poster, the rock mags, and the buildup to going to see that concert made life in highschool bearable. A few beers, tokes, and a ride to a concert with an adequately slutty date. Teenage heaven. I never expected perfect sound or note for note playing. It was a party. More like a rite of passage.

I've seen him quite a few times...he's very inconsistant. I thought he sounded great on both the Tooth and Nail and ULAK tours. He blew on Monsters of Rock although he had amp problems at the very beginning (Pittsburgh show) that delayed their start by about 15 minutes (after a recorded intro of "Without Warning" he charged out on stage, hit opening chord to the first song and...nothing   )...who knows what he ended up using that day. He sounded great on the first Lynch Mob tour, not so good on the second. Didn't see him again until a solo tour in '05 and he was so bad, playing and tone, that I walked out about 1/2 way through his set. Bummer...he was one of my biggest inspirations back in the day.
Yeah I hated his tone when they played Monster of Rock tour. It was just a thin lost signal....
Scorpions blew everyone away on that tour tone wise.
My opinion only. :D
But a good opinion it is  The Scorpions owned that tour IMO too. Compared to the way they brought it on the 5150 tour, VH was a big let down as well.

Between the Scorps and Van Halen at RFK, everyone else should have stayed home for the MOR tour in 89? It was the last event at RFK before it was demo'ed I think. People were building bonfires with the wooden chairs they ripped from the stands. Dokken had issues the entire set. Don and George were both yelling and screaming at each other and the techs trying to fix it. There was such a huge difference in both sound and stage presence between the Scorps and everyone else.

THIS I remember... THIS rings true to me. Hell, it was the energy and the 'scene', less the guitarist or musicians' skills that got me goin'. It was a party...and it was a rite of passage - truer words have not been spoken. I believe for the most part, I was pretty oblivious to many things back in the day as I was always high, partying, on something, coming off of something, trying to nail this girl or that girl, my image, my jeans, my hair - I'm being honest here - highschool was a social scene, not a place to learn (granted I managed honour role even though I was a waste-case, the teachers just left me alone as my grades kicked). BUT!!! I do remember hearing what I thought was GOOD guitar back then, but in retrospect, it was probably less "good guitar" and skill, than it was hooks, melodies, and packaging that made it all come together and resonante with me as a youth in the 80's.
