I miss being able to play out with two full stacks, attitude, lots a great bands, lots of great guitarists, lots of, ahem... Good times...

Anyway, I was cleaning out my garage today and ran across these pictures of my stint with Black Sheep circa 87-88'

Willie Basse (bass, lead vocals), Todd DeVito (Drums), and yours truly (guitar, back-up vocals)...

Small world I played with Todd right after that...

Todd was a monster, his timing was impeccable. He reminded me of a John Bonham meets Ginger Baker. But, his volume was unreal... I needed two stacks just to keep up volume wise...Maybe he mellowed out when you played with him?

Hell no...he got worse, the singer who played rhythm guitar's time drove him nuts, so in order to try to reign his time in he hit his fucking kick drum so hard he literally broke a kick drum pedal a week. Saw him NAMM before last and seems he's doing a'oght.

LOL! Yup, that's Todd...

What fusionbear is too modest to admit here is that Black Sheep was the hot bed for smoking guitarists in LA. How smoking? Let's put it this way, Paul Gilbert was in Black Sheep and left to form Racer X. Kurt James was in Black Sheep and left Black Sheep to replace YNGWIE FREAKING MALMSTEEN in Steeler. And then came fusionbear.

as was Lynch, as was Slash...me...etc...

The only reason I left was because it was Willie's band. He wanted to write all the music and get all the royalties. He wouldn't allow any co-writing when I was in the band. I was very discouraged because I had a lot of great metal tunes in my head at the time with nowhere to go. Also, I realized I would only be a hired gun in that band. I hated to go, but I knew it was the right thing to do. I have yet to have as much fun in a band as I had in Black Sheep...

One of the happiest moments I had in that band was the last gig I played with them at Gazzari's (now the Key Club). It was a gig that we had a guest female back-up singer. Forgot her name, but she was great. Anyway, Todd is a perfectionist and would always critique Willie and I after every gig. But on that gig he gave me the one and only compliment he ever gave me. Todd, if you are out there, Thanks! It meant a lot to me (I still remember after all these years)...

Dude he lives in OC these days...goes by Vito DeVito now

Who doesn't miss the 80's. I was about 12 when you were in Black Sheep. The 90's was supposed to be my decade. Well, it sucked. Even then, I knew it was a something special.

One that goes to 11!

Since this is rig talk, here was rig in that band:

Guitars: Kramer Stagemaster with FR. Loaded with Ultrasonic pups, I wired the Anderson "switcharoo" switches. Kramer Focus 1000, Ibanez Rocket Roll II, BC Rich Warlock with Kahler trem, BC Rich ST-3 (also with Ultrasonics and "switcharoo).

Amp: Mesa MKIII no dot Colosseum head (one of the first ones), 78' Mesa MKI, Carvin Monitor power amp with Graphic EQ. (to power second stack). I had a Jose modded Marshall at the time, but never used it with this band.

Cabs: four Mesa 4x12 half-backs loaded with Celestion 80's on top and EV's on the bottom.

Effects: TC2290 with foot controller, Alesis Quadraverb, The most expensive wireless at the time (can't remember the brand)

Cables: whatever Lab Sound in Garden Grove carried and recommended.

Here is what the 80's were to me music wise. When songs were coming out in the early to mid 80's....metal...hair metal....thrash....etc. It was all FRESH! Started getting stale and overplayed/copied over and over in the 90's.
Hard for me to hear something these days that really catches my ear and say "Hell yeah!"
Last time that happened was the Foo Fighters.
I really dont listen to much modern day stuff. Not that I dont try to listen to it. Just dont care for it much.
Guess I am an old Foggie....
ahhhhh well......its only Rock N Roll.
Different Strokes.

I hate to be cliche but I haven't had a gig in the last 18 years or so that came close to the fun and madness of the late 80's early 90's gigs. The players, the venues, the crowds. Sorry its just not the same. It's really too bad. I don't miss the music so much as the experience. :aww: :aww:

I loved the LA and OC scene from about 80-84 but didn't really like where things were headed and faded off for a few years. Came back with an instrumental band for a short time in the late 80s and again shut it down shortly thereafter.

The 80's were definitely a great time.

Although I do still enjoy much of the rock music between the late 70s to mid 80s, you hit the nail on the head.
