I need help. Please.

I just purchased an Ampeg vh140c. I know most of you are more into tube amps but I thought some rig-talker may have an idea for me.
Hooked up the head in the shop. Worked fine. Hooked up at home and had the speaker output in the chorus channel, nothing. So I switched to just output channel, worked fine. Plugged back to chorus, worked fine. So I played for a few minutes. Next night Turned it on, nothing so I turned up the main volume and suddenly BAM loud as hell( scared the shit out of me). Played for bout 2 hours and it was fine.

Saturday turned it on to show a friend my new rig and ... nothing. I can turn the main volume up all the way and just barely hear the guitar ( with gain ) . I messed with it for a while changing channels,adjusting volume, unplugging/plugging stuff in, different cables. Finally I plugged into the preamp input on the back. Amp plays but at one level with no adjustment and no effects. Plug back in the front...Nothing.

Anyone have any ideas as to what the heck is wrong?

Why would the chorus channel have it's own speaker output? Don't plug your speaker cord into anything that isn't labeled directly as a "speaker output". Damage to the amp is likely if you aren't in a SPEAKER OUT.

Have you tried patching from send to return on the loop?

This makes no sense. My guess is when it's not working, you are plugging the speaker cabinet into the send or return of the effects loop or a "direct out" jack and not the speaker jack.

As Chubtone said, make sure your the cable from your speaker cabinet is plugged in to one of the speaker jacks.

Have you tried patching from send to return on the loop?

No but I was pondering that today. Think I'll try that tonight

Most likely a bad jack somewhere, probably your input jack. I had the same problem before with a crappy solid state amp though.

I think most people are confused by your post since the VH140C has 2 4 ohm Speaker outputs, 1 that carries the Chorus and one sepearate dry one.

Came home tonight and looped the preamp out to the line in, kinda statiky( is that a word?) unpluged the loop moved input from high to low, Bam working amp. Switched input from low to high, all systems go. Gotta be a bad conection or cold solder er something. It's goin to the shop tomorrow.

Are you sure?

A search shows the chorus outputs on the Ampeg VH140C are preamp outputs, not speaker outputs.....

EDIT - Never mind, it does indeed have 'chorus' speaker outputs as well as preamp outputs...
