I need to learn how to play…

ok-watched this vid for about 5 minutes where this guy was taking the pentatonic and adding minor 7th(?) arpeggios to it and it sounded pretty bitchin. Had no technical concept of what he was doing but it sounded great.

Again, you don't have to think about it though.
Easiest way to do an arpeggio in the pentatonic scale is just skip a couple notes.

Standard A
5-8, 5-7, 5-7, 5-7, 5-8, 5-8

Try this
5-8, 5, 5-7, 5, 5-8, 5

Or
5-8, 7, 7, 5, 5-8, 5

Easy.
You can make them up as you go along by skipping notes here and there.

@JackBootedThug if your goal is to play up and down the neck, why don’t you just play 7 notes and then repeat them up and down the neck?

Literally play any 7 notes that sound good to you. Then just use your ear to find the same notes a little bit up the neck?

Steve Vais first lesson with Satriani, Joe said if you don’t know all the notes and where they reoccur, it’s like trying to speak a language without learning the alphabet.

You’ve already got a lot of skill on the guitar, all you need to do is know where the notes are and where they repeat.

Modes are just a way to organize the same notes in different spots on the neck. Once you practice and learn where all the notes are on the neck, the rest should fall into place a whole lot easier.

It’s like learning your abc’s before you start forming sentences!

there's no magic IME; there are many ways to approach modes/scales/chords, finding the approach that makes sense to you among all the approaches is the difficult part. it's like finding the rosetta stone when you find yours.

I still laugh in awe when I watch that Holdsworth Lesson 1 video I posted earlier. More like lesson 101 for us mere mortals.
