I said I hated the JVM...

For years I never liked it. I'd plug into one and play it and thought that Marshall had lost their mind's creating such a crappy product. I'd advise people on the forum to steer clear of them. Their tone was always too boomy for my ears. But last night (Thursday), I bought a Marshall JVM 205H.

Originally, I had bought a Blackstar HT-100. I demo'd one in a store and really liked it. A forum member was selling his here, so I bought it from him. I got it home and plugged into it, and it just sounded too nasally for my ears. It had an ok solo tone, but I wasn't digging the amp. A day later, I had sold it on Egay.

So, I'm at my local GC center last night and I'm playing around with a Krank Rev, JVM410H and 205H, the JDM 1 and an Egnater Renegade. The Egnater was the worst on the distorted channel, but had nice cleans. The Krank had to be cranked to sound good and at low volumes, it was buzzy and bland sounding. The JDM1 surprised the hell out of me. It sounded very good and seemed super versatile, but something was missing (pun). It had a ton of sounds, but they were missing that special something. The effects seemed too pronounced as well.

So I'm playing the 2 JVM's and they're dialed in pretty nicely. I'm thinking to myself that I've always hated these things, but they really are sounding pretty sweet. For some reason the 4 channel version sounded like it had a little too much treble. I had both JVM's going into Identical cabs and set their EQ's the same and the 410H just sounded a little to bright.

So there I am, playing the 205H, really enjoying it and decided to pick it up.

I got it home an unlike the Blackstar, it still sounded really good. I can get a nice spank out of it, get 80's Ratt and Dokken tones and get into metal territory. If I set up the footswitch, theoretically I could use it as a 6 channel head. It's also different enough from my Orange RV100 so I can cover different ground with each one.

I know its a Marshall, but does the JVM 205H have any clean to speak of?

Do you still prefer the Orange Rockerverb 100?

It has what I hear as a fender clean channel. There's lots of spank and there's spring reverb, which helps. I think the amp is very well suited for John Frusciante. It sounds like his RHCP work.

I do still like my Rockerverb more. It's one of the best amps I've played. I was a/b-ing it with my old 5153 and a QR and it sounded better than both of them. The only thing I wasn't able to get on my Orange was a JCM800 tone, and a fender clean tone, hence why I got the JVM. The Orange makes sweet, sweet love to my ears when I play it. It's got a vibe similar to an SLO, but is better for the stoner rock thing. It's got a lot of useable gain and the clean channel is awesome.

I played a JVM yesterday and thought it was ok. It had a lot of gain but something about it it missing for me, not sure what. Funny, i played a Renegade a fe days ago that i thought sounded better. Maybe it was because i played the Renegade on one of those EVH cabs that's loaded with Heritage Greenbacks and the JVM was on a new Marshall slant with shitty 75's. ?

I wouldnt say fender clean but pretty good for el34's..

I remember playing a Traynor YCS50 w/ el34's. It has a great fender-like sound.

I just put a set of Gold Lion KT77's in my JVM, it was a significant improvement, especially in the clean channel. Opened it up more, had more headroom, and sounded bigger overall. Nice surprise

I think you're insane for not liking the Renegade's dirty channel! One of the best I've played at any price point.

Charvels into a JVM is all I run now for live and it sounds great.

Welcome to the club.
