and i have to say
he is still the king
untouchable and just aggro ripping like only he can

jimmy haslip was killing it on bass and virgil donati was quite over the top

if this show comes to your hood do yourself a favor and check out the master he still reigns supreme in a way only he can

same lineup as the sabian 30th anniversary show at NAMM 2012 i shot this at:

he was sorta off that night but still better than 99.9999 percent of the planet

Love Holdsworth. Light years beyond anyone in my opinion.

Allan is such a freak. I still love watching that Tokyo vid from '84 where he's ripping on the red Charvel.

With all those notes...there has to be a melody in there somewhere. Forest.. say hello to trees. :D I love Allan when he shares one with us. And when he doesn't.

Sounds like an LA lineup... Baked Potato?

he was playing a headless bill delap with one humbucker thru a bunch of yamaha magic stomps and a pair of H&K combos in stereo
tone was great

The funny part about this is if someone took those live drums and made them into a track, then video taped themselves playing EXACTLY what holdsworth is playing, but they were sitting in their bedroom, 90% of everyone here would scoff at it...

....this playing does absolutely nothing for me... it's a talent I admit I don't have, and never will, but if I can't at least get into some kind of groove or have a connection with the music it's totally worthless to me.

Just IMO of course...

he should have been a jazz saxophonist, his playing is just blinding, improvisational and reminds you of the great sax players just killing it. Intervals in his stuff are pretty scary.

Umm, call me a cave man but I am not well rounded enough or smart enough to get any of Holdsworth stuff, never got it. That said I do get this... :D

are they solo ing against each other>?
I'm too dumb for this kind of music.

That pretty much sums up how I feel. I just can't begin to enjoy it.

Sounds like a train wreck to me but I'm semi retarted so there you go. ;)

Just yesterday after reading the greatest rock song ever thread I was listening to Sin City thinking it might be the best thing ever recorded.

I'm very surprised that Allan is back to playing Carvins. He'd all but given up on them & was playing & designing an AH model with Rick Canton. Now he's back to Carvins, minus the headstock. Go figure!!!!

I'm a HUGE AH fan & ordered a Carvin H2 built to Allan's specs (Alder body/neck, ebony fingerboard etc) & as nice a guitar as it was, it just felt & sounded really odd to me, so I returned it to Carvin for an ST300. The neck on the H2 was HUGE & I mean H U G E!!!!

Here's a quick clip of the H2 before I decided to return it.

Miles Davis was way beyond. Just check out Kind of Blue and Bitches Brew. It's funny most of the white guys suck compared to black musicians in rock or jazz (Miles, Coltrane, Living Colour dude, Jimi Hendrix to name a few)

I'd say that SRV was totally sick (as was Dimebag Darrell). couple of exceptions of course.

there is no middle ground either you get his chordal harmony concepts and soloing or you don't.

he is soloing over a different chord change every bar which is the exact opposite of most metal guys

not only that but all of the chords are extended and complex.
he was zappa's fave guitar player.

i don't think it's even fair to put into the same category as tipton/downing /metal since they are worlds apart
it's real jazz and it's next level jazz at that.

i feel bad for anyone whose ears aren't open enough to enjoy it because it's special and unique, but i understand why and how it could be a turn off to some folks.

older allan may be more digestable for some

i listened to him when i woke this morning. a king among men that holdsworth.

I am just having some fun with the Priest reference although for my taste I like that. I get he is doing crazy hard technical stuff. I tried listening to it back in the late 1980s as well when he had that canoe pedal Steinberger and the Dutch Boy haircut. I just didn't get it but that doesn't mean that I am right. Not a turn off, wish I could get it.

I have heard people actually compare him to one of my favorite players ever, Robert Johnson as they were both off the charts with ground breaking stuff for their time and genre. I guess Im more into bending the strings and lyrical solos and emotive playing as opposed to the horn lines and hard scales for hard scales sake.

I always imagined the crowds at a Holdsworth show to be the local math club and some Star Trek conventioneers who missed the bus to the Spock signing and wandered in to the show.

I love Motown players and that whole vibe so I guess I like my horn lines to come from horns and Steve Cropper guitar lines to come from guitar if that makes any sense.

Come to think of it I didn't get Zappa either and I know all the really good guitar players did so maybe I am just the moron here (most likely).
