Running my Marshall SLP wide open tonight - after about 10-15 minutes I noticed a solder smell. Immediately put the amp on standby, checked the tubes and they looked ok.

Didn't happen yesterday, but I had the backplate off. I had the backplate on tonight. Am I running it too hot or is there a potential issue?

Sounds like a heating transformer.

solder points have a flast point much higher than ambient temperatures seen on/around a working circuit. your stressing your transformer and smelling resin melting inside the core windings of possibly your PT. unless you have eddie currents flowing in your OT, i would almost bet its your PT.

i would not recommend running that amplifier again until someone has a chance to check the circuit parameters to make sure everything is in working order. you do NOT want to short a transformer winding due to a defective circuit fault, replace the transformer, and cook the second one right after it by not analyzing the circuit in question in complete detail to isolate the problem to a defective PT.
