I've got an old RG560 from about '86 and although it served me well back in the day, it sounds kind of thin today. Anybody know anything about the pickups?

In my experience, stock Ibanez pickups pretty much suck balls.

The old V1/V2 Pickups were designed by Dimarzio, similar to those "Duncan Designed" pickups you see in inexpensive guitars. They were just cost effective alternative to putting in full priced Dimarzio pickups in it. The V2 should be modeled after the Super Distortion but with an Alnico instead of Ceramic, can read anywhere between 12-16k. V1 is a generic neck/lead pickup that should be somewhere around 9k, no one really remembers or knows which pickup that one is modeled after.

They're alright for stock pickups, some folks think they really scream, but I've found in the older Ibanez's the specs on these pickups are realllllly out of whack. You can get a good set or you could get a crap set. In my humble opinion, there are a lot better options out there today than keeping them in there. If you like the Dimarzio route try out a Tone Zone/Air Norton or even a Crunchlab/Liquifire (which is becoming my "go to" pickups for Ibanez guitars).

I've got an RG550 that has them in it. OG 1987 I bought brandy new back in the day. I can see the Super Distortion V2 thing. But it's really not that close. There is that dimarzio growl I love. Like the TZ or the EBMM Axis/EVH pickups. Just with slightly less output. And not as much output as a SD I assure you. I love the Tone Zone. I don't feel the need to put one in my 550. It's already similar enough. My only compliant is the bass is a little muddy. Which is a basswood thing sometimes. And only a little. Most people wouldn't notice. Neck pickup works just fine. And I get good single coil Strat type tones. My fave sounding guitar is the Axis/EVH EBMM. That old Ibanez is so close it's not worth the trouble to pull out the old pickups. Well close enough I should say. Actually the main reason I never switched pickups is the guitar as it sits gets amazing harmonics! They fly outta that thing. And there's a thing if I get the vibrato just right while holding a note at the 15th fret high e it splits into a harmonic. Which is pretty damn cool.

With a little height adjustment I got my Ibanez stock pickups to sound pretty damn good. I know some people hate the V pickups. I myself played a 1990 ish one that had V2 with script writing and they sucked. Mine are block style font. I never heard they were inconsistent. Makes sense to me.

And that's why there are so many pickups out there. We all hear things differently. Do what you gotta do to get the sound you want.

I have an RG570, the japanese one form 2013 and i must tell you. I find my pickups to be decent when im using them on positions 1 or 5 but when i use the in between positions with my tone knob all the way down, they almost sound like they have a certain wah effect to them but they just sound amazing
