I was using the ice cream maker attachment for my Kitchenaid mixer, which is basically a special freezer bowl, for like 20 years.
It takes up freezer space, and has to be in the freezer for 24hrs before you can use it.
Well i recently went all out trying to make some Cherry Garcia ice cream, and the freezer bowl shit the bed. The ice cream never froze, ended up putting it in a baking dish to freeze it which fucked up the texture. Flavor was still good though. I only made it because i saw the fresh cherries in the store.
So, i was basically deciding between buying another freezer bowl for the mixer for like $100, or spending more $$$ and getting a proper standalone ice cream machine that has its own compressor and no more freezer bowl.
After researching for a couple days, i decided to buy a dedicated ice cream machine. It was more expensive, but i like to experiment and make different ice cream and sorbets and such. It came in handy last night for sure.
Today was my little cousin's birthday party, and she can't have dairy. I figured making sorbet would be a good test of the brand new machine.
I asked her mom what kind of sorbet i should make, i was thinking watermelon but she said pineapple. I had already bought the watermelon, so i just made both.
The beauty of that, is with this machine you can make back-to-back batches, can't do that with a freezer bowl.
Super easy, each batch only took about 20 minutes. The pineapple came out better than the watermelon, but both were acceptable.
They were a big hit at the birthday party.
Very happy with the purchase so far, i'm already thinking of wacky shit to make with it. Bought some rhubarb to make some rhubarb sorbet, and i saw a recipe for melon & prosciutto sorbet as well. And obviously going to try the Cherry Garcia again. I want to add more cherries as i thought it had too much chocolate and not enough cherry flavor.
