if you could play any guitar rig ever, who/when would it be?

Sometimes when I listen to Eric Johnson, and hear Cliffs of Dover, it just amazes me he is playing a strat with an old overdrive. The way he plays, and the tone he gets, it makes it seem like his guitar plays effortlessly. I imagine the touch sensitivity requiring almost nothing to sound a note, like the notes are just ready to explode or fly off of the fretboard. By no means is he my favorite, but the tone and style is pretty amazing. When that came out, I had been playing for a handful of years and the tones (in my limited experience) that I associated with a strat were not what I was hearing on cliffs of dover. I would play that rig just to see the playability of that rig. he makes it sound so smooth and effortless. although, Jimmy Page would be a close second. And of course, because of all the questions and false information about the first EVH album, that would be a close third.
 
zachman's rig......epic. and i would make it sound like dogshit because that's how i roll....

Half jokingly I would be interested in messing with Thomas Fischer's rig from his early Celtic Frost years... one of the most unique guitar tones to my ears... not saying I'd like to sound like that either but this guy wasn't copying anybody thats for sure...

But a rig I could honestly spend hours playing without out a doubt would be Scott Ian's rig from SOD's Speak English or Die... just legendary sounding stuff to me... I miss that whole era.

Friggin' A....was already typing this in my head when I read the thread title lol. In particular, the song "Stop Fighting Love", just perfect imo.

If I could play his rig pa'd thru a full concert hall....
That would be the ultimate :rock:
 
Lynch came to mind for me too, though I think his recorded Under Lock & Key tone is my favorite.

But for live rigs, I've gotta go Mick Mars. Not even sure which year(s) I'd pick, but man he's gotten some of the thickest killer tones I've ever heard.

Just a note. I went to see Eric, one of the many times, at a club in Scottsdale AZ. a dozen or so years ago.
His tech checked the rig just before Eric came out. He was a fast player. He ripped the hell out of the guitar for about 20 seconds. The tone was glorious.
Just making the point that his rig sounded killer with another player that didn't play like him.
I would love to play that rig. It's not my sound but it's iconic.

I agree. I think Mick's live tone at the end of his career is one of the best live heavy rock tones I've ever heard. He uses detune in just the right way where it thickens the tone but doesn't overtake it. Massive, cutting, and just mean as hell.
 
I would have to say I would go after the EVH rig from the VH3 tour ... yes everyone says Gary was shit, but EVH's tone for that tour was insane !
 
John Sykes Jose Modded Marshall he used on Bad Boy live. It's just one amp, that I would sound average on. Or worse. But recorded album tones are usually like 8 amps mixed. ULAK is also one of my favorite recorded tones..Adam Jones 10000 days is also amazing...
