if you could play any guitar rig ever, who/when would it be?

Mick Mars did have some thick tone. I'd love to play through any of his rigs. Or the KSE guys.

Ronson's rig when he was playing with Bowie
Gilmour's rig around The Wall
Iommi's rig for Paranoid
Scholz's original Boston rig
Cantrell's rig around Dirt

I would have mentioned EVH if he wasn't already. I would say Hendrix's, but I don't think I could play his guitar since I'm a righty.

It's not a Strat on Cliffs of Dover, it's a 335...

wow, I didn't know that!! No wonder I was so baffled how a strat could sound like that!!
I had the same reaction when I read it. Two other tone mashups are Page's solo on Stairway being played on a Tele through a Supro amp (!), and Gilmour recording the solo in Comfortably Numb on a Les Paul.

I´ve always thought Cliffs of Dover is both a strat and a 335, they come and go thru the song.

Petrucci rig of some years ago, with 3 Mark IIC+, TC 2290 and Eventide DSP 7000.

I read it was a 335, but maybe you're right. That violin tone would be hard to get from single coils I think... whatever it is, it works for him. It's not a tone I'd like everyday, but he makes it sound magical.

Right now I'm totally into Toni Iommi's Dio years. His rig was supposedly modded Marshall on Heaven and Hell and the same Marshall mixed with a Mesa Boogie on Mob Rules. Want that Sign of the Southern Cross tone!!!
