if you don't like V30s.....

V30s can be great and obviously are meant to sit in a mix but they can be a bit unpleasant and too dry and direct sounding to me at times. I want to check out the V Type.

This video perfectly shows what I like and dislike about them. These two speakers together are amazing though.

Agree with skoora and JB. Getting great results with WGS speakers these days: ET-65, Liberator, ET-90. All voiced off the old Celestion G12T-65 speakers that came in the JCM800 lead cabs.

I love the G12-65's.
That being said, I don't think that the ET-65 sounds anything like a real one. Same wattage but the similarities end there. More V30'ish IMO.

Don't care for vintage 30's at all. Glad all of you love them so I can hopefully get deals on used cabs that have other speakers.
+1 Lol, I don't like em' either. Give me a greenback type speaker any day. Hell I like the G12T-75 celestions better than the v30s.

They sound way better with all my amps. Only things that rival are my Marshall 425A/B cabs and my 1960B with H30's. Dead heat is anything with Splawn Small/Big Blocks.
Definitely a fan of the original 65 and the ET65. Favorite speaker until I realized how great this V30 cab sounds. And my other favorite is the G12C that comes in those 425s...not really a GB fan per say but those are killer.

My Marshall "Barney" 4x12 with Marshall-labeled V30s is my reference cab, and one of several cabs that I use for testing and tweaking all my amp designs.

Yes, it has the leather top handles, and I added the side handles because it's a bitch to move without them!

I loved my V30's. They were original Mesa V30s from 2001. I recently sold them and replaced them with G12K-100's and I like the 100's as well, but I still miss the low end at lower volumes with the V30's. The 100's a quite a bit stiffer but i like their clean tones better than the V30.

My front loaded Diezel cab with v30's is the best sounding cab I've ever owned or played through.

Cab makes a big difference. I loaded a quad of vintage 30's in one of my Cameron 4x12's (which is basically a Bogner cabinet ) and it sounded just okay...kind of loose in the bottom end. Put them back in the Boogie 4x12 and they were tight with that punch and pop the Mesa cabinets are known for. I have never liked Marshall cabinets with vintage 30's. They were always bright and harsh. FWIW, the Cameron cabinets sound killer with the Anniversary H30's.
Is this one of the oversized Mesa cabs?

No, I prefer the standard straight cabs (old stiletto cabs too).

What are your thoughts on putting polyfill on the back panel like some of the high end cabs?

I find the V30 very well suited to Marshall 18W type combos. To me they are less midrangy than real vintage Celestions which can sound dull in the mix.

I think part of the dislike is that V30's are often loaded in 2x12 and 1x12 cabs. And a lot of people, sometimes myself, just don't like the way a 2x12 or 1x12 cab sounds by itself and the speakers get blamed for it and you have the V30 hate. Especially if that guy goes back and plays his Greenback loaded 4x12. A lot of guys like those OS Bogner 2x12's and to me 4x12's just sound soo much better. A broken in Mesa or Bogner with V30's is just perfect in a band mix.

I can relate to this. My aforementioned Laney 112 combo, Avatar 112, and Orange PPC 212 were all inferior to any of my 412s. Cost and portability aside, I've not discovered anything to make a 112 or 212 more desirable than a 412.

I'll take a 4X12 loaded with Greenbacks any day over one that has V30's for classic & 80's rock .
You should'nt have any problems being heard in the mix on stage or FOH , if you set your amp up right .

On another note , can someone please explain to me WTF Haunting Mids are ?

Maybe that depends on the amp. My SLO clone cuts WAY more with my V30 cab. Once I'm at high volume with the GBs dialing in more treble or presence doesn't do much. It's as if they're already driven to full saturation across the spectrum and I'm just squeezing it harder. It's a sweet sound no doubt, but I disagree that it's a mere matter of dialing in the amp to cut the mix. I should also mention I don't shy away from the gain, so I wouldn't characterize my style as classic rock by any stretch fwiw.

Take this with a grain of salt because i am using a Torpedo live. My small box sounds the best when using a v30 cab in the live. I don't think i would put one in my 1x12 smallbox combo infact the creamback m magnet is about as good as it gets for a 1x12 cab. If i had a 4x12 i would totally rock all v30's or half greenbacks.

Maybe it's your cabinet you use , not saying that it's bad but built different than other brands which produces different tones .
With my Soldano HR100+ and a Avatar Vintage 4X12 with Greenbacks i can get more highs than i can stand to hear with just turning the EQ knobs on the amp , and with no outboard EQ's either .
As i turn up and hit the sweet spot i do back off the pre gain some which opens up the tone without getting it over compressed which Soldano's will do if you go hog wild with the preamp gain settings .
