I'm a rack guy now.... So I have a couple questions

  • Thread starter Thread starter J.B.
  • Start date Start date
One thing I have to say, get everything you are going to get down on paper before investing. I didn't plan my first rack out and it was a disaster, so I just go straight in to my Mark IV now. :D Traumatic experience....

Racks are teh ghey.

What's your favorite preamp?

That's a tough question.

#1. Egnater M4.
2. Egnater IE-4
3. Bogner Fish
4. Groove Tubes Trio
5. VHT GP-3
6. Sound Clinic Climax
7. Mesa Quad
8. Mesa Triaxis
9. ADA MP-1

Then, everything else.

Put a space between your power amp and the effects above it (for cooling and less noice interferrence).
But in looking at your list of components you may not have that option.
I was acually thinking about doing that. I might not put the drawer in it so I'll have more room, and I can leave an open space above the poweramp. I have a feeling I've just opened up a big can of stinky worms. :D
If you put the drawer on top of the amp, that would eliminate any noise issues. If the amp doesn't have any top venting, it won't matter for cooling, so you'd be ok.
That's where I was going to put it. But I am concerned with heat. I believe the VHTs are vented all the way around the amp (from what Velcro Fly told me, I don't get mine til tomorrow).

There are venting holes in the side of the amp and the fan blows out the back. Besides that, the poweramp is much longer as and other rack equipment I've seen so not leaving a space between them isn't going to be a problem. (at least I've never experienced any)

Clean and simple. Looks great.

Kage, are you using the volumefunction on the rackwah ? (by the look of the led's you do) I've tried it again recently and immediately stopped it again because of the noise and tonesucking...

Hey Jan!!! I most definitely am using the Volume function but Ive never had a problem with Noise or tone sucking from it. I do have some noise issues but it hasnt been anything to do with the rack wah...

That is awesome JB! I have not been around much lately and didn't even know you got an Axe.

You know my gear whoring ways and since getting my Axe (now have 2), the only reason I have bought anything else was to A/B the tone, then it was off. Absolute best amplifier purchase I have ever made.

A couple points/suggestions:

The tuner on the axe works great when you get used to it. It jumped around for me visually at first too, but now I am used to that visual....it is quite accurate.

The VHT 2/50/2 is my second favorite power amp for the Axe. My fave.....Mesa Simul Satellite rackmount. This thing is the bomb. Mesa Mark power section with the Axe is lights out for me.

If there is anything I can help you with, just drop me a line or call me...I am well over a year in with this thing. It is DEEP and a bit intimidating (at least for me), but once you get your head around it, the possibilities are endless.

FWIW, I have always loved the basic Recto tone, but never quite got there with the real thing. Recto Orange, with some tweaks to tighten the bottom and lose some of the fizz is the best Recto tone I have ever had.

I am not part of the evangelist (sp) crowd, but this thing is what I have been looking for for years all in one box

Tony my man!!! Now why do you have to go and tell me about the Mesa the day I get the VHT? :gethim:

Surprisingly enough, the Recto orange and new are some of my favorite high gain tones in the Axe Fx. I love the fact that you can get the amp 95% to the origonal. And then dial all the shit you didn't like about that amp out, and then tweak from there. What's not to love? :D

Now don't get me wrong....the VHT kicks ass with the Axe (as does the Carvin DCM600 IMHO), but I have a special place in my heart for Mark series power sections and the Simul Sat delivers.

I haven't messed with the Recto New much since 7.04...need to check it out. My main high gainers are:

Recto Orange
D60+
2C+
5150...can't remember the name at the moment
X99
USA Lead1

The Energyball has potential, but I haven't gotten it where I want it yet and I also fiddle with the Diezel sim sometimes, but the ones above are where I get the majotity of my high gain stuff.

Did you ever give the VHT 2/90/2 a go? I've heard those are really nice withe Axe also?
