I'm gassing for a ENGL now... Engl owners come inside

Tried one two days ago, a Savage 120 and boy this thing sounded good.
Lots of gain, modern sounding, enough saturation and sustain, sounds good a lower volume.
Tried it with the Engl cab with V30.
I don't know.... Sounds tempting.

Anybody have experience with that amp?
 
Its my favorite engl, and probably the most well liked engl as well.
 
I enjoyed my Fireball 100 on it's own, sounded great. Modern, lots of gain, tight etc, but as soon as I got in the band scenario it was lost. Even with mids on 10 and the mid boost engaged. And I'm the only guitarist!

Fireball ain't no Savage 120, that has mids-a-plenty and cuts through VERY easily.

I owned a Savage120 for 8 years and sold it because I wanted something different after all those years. I also owned the Savage SE (not the current SE) for about 6 of those 8 years. Both killer and versatile amp. The Sav120 with V30s cuts thru like there's no tomorrow, big tones with those 6550s. It's the only amp I have ever had and sold that I wish I didn't.
 
I spent a lot of time with a Savage about a year ago. If not for the Axe-Fx I would own one now...one of the coolest sounding new amps that I've played.
 
Love my Savage 120, but have considered selling a few time - NOT anything with the amp - just cuz I am now only a bedroom guitarist.

Very versatile amp...

It would be an amp that I would use live that has to be on par with my current #1 amp i.e. Boogie Mark IV.
I love the Mark IV and I thought the feel of the Savage was similar but with a very different voicing.

I'm happy to read that it cuts with a band.

It sounded great alone.....but easily got lost in the band.
Loved my Engl Savage and Invader 150! :rock:

I owned a bunch of engls and my 2 favs was the blackmore and savage 120.

Did you use it with V30s? I'm shocked it didn't cut in a band situation, tbh.....I mean I had the old Fireball 60 and yes, I had problems with that one cutting through but, I figured the added wattage/mid boost would help that?

Just because one or two dudes had a bad experience does not mean it won't cut for you. So many variables: guitar, cables, cab speakers and technique are all very big factors here. Also, EQ is a major factor as well ( I am not saying that Mailman and Herbie can't dial in an amp, just sayin ;) ) Don't lose hope yet. :) It may or may not work for you. :)
 
I have spent time with the Savage 120, great amp. It was not such a huge difference that it would validate selling my Invader though. They both have that Engl tone. :thumbsup:

The Savage 120 & SE EL34s are Engls 2 best amps IMHO.
 
I love ENGL gear. Here's my current rig:

I also own Mesa/Boogie gear (Road King II and Triaxis/2:Ninety rig). In many ways, ENGL is the German equivalent of America's Mesa/Boogie. Very similar companies in terms of size, types of products, etc. But ENGL surpasses Boogie in terms of MIDI implementation -- even the standard heads have MIDI control for instant integration into any rig with a MIDI foot controller.

I have also played through the SE head when I did a fly-in gig to L.A., and it was monstrously heavy -- more than my e580/850 rig. I'm not sure if I liked the tone quite as much, but it worked great for my purposes.

ENGL has the most amazing clean tones of anyone -- even cleaner than Boogie cleans, and totally different than, say, a Fender clean. More like pristine studio-quiet clean. And the high-gain tones are fantastic. You'll get some similar tones to your Mark IV, but then the ENGL will give you some different sonic characteristics that definitely make it sound unique.

Definitely spend for their pro series cabinets. They have different speakers and premium wood/construction compared to the cheaper ones. And they are all wired for mono or stereo operation, whereas the cheaper line is just mono. The cabs are voiced differently. For a while I was playing my ENGL rig through my Rectifier Traditional 4x12 and it sounded much better when I finally got the ENGL Pro 412 cab. Likewise my Boogie gear sounds better through the Boogie cabs that I have... these companies really optimize their amps to their cabs.
