I'm looking to get an amp that has a nice lead/rhythm rock tone, e.g. Van Halen, and i'm loving the way this Metropolis 68 replica sounds.
Since i feel i'm about to head down the path to look for this vintage marshall tone, what other amp(s) should i be looking at? The $2500 price tag on this Metropolis amp doesn't seem too bad but can this tone be had for less than that?

They are awesome amps. The 12000 series are spot on early VH.

Not sure you will find a better made and spot on repro of that amp. George knows his stuff and his builds are among the best out there.

i haven't had GAS for an amp this bad in a long, long time. i think the price on these is also going up starting February 1st so i may have to make a decision quickly/hastily

Sure it can - obtain the parts and build it yourself and save over a grand...

That said, I love the 12 Series Metros George builds. He's one bad mutha when it comes to reproducing a great Marshall... If you decide to go for one, I recommend the optional line out for efx and FOR SURE the LarMar PPIMV or you are gonna go deaf getting the tone in that clip...

Oh yeah, one more thing... you better have the touch for one of those beasts... If you are used to high gainers, you got some reality to deal with...

They are great amps for sure!! Just keep in mind in order to get that tone you will need to keep two things in mind. 1) You have to crank the shit out of it, so a good attenuator might be the ticket if you want to save your ears. 2) The cab and speakers that they are using accounts for half that tone and that's a fact. ;)

Hope this helps!!

I was actually debating building something like it myself but where would i start for even going to look for specific information about this style amp? Would the Metro Plexi kits be a reasonable place to start or would they sound nothing like this sucker?

I probably would have enough time to actually work on this thing a few days a week, plus i feel it would be a good learning experience and i'm ALL FOR saving some $$$

Would a MV or PPIMV help this at all?
I don't own an attenuator but i've got 2 other 100+ watt amps so i feel like i should break down and get one sooner or later to save my ears.
So as far as speakers go, would greenbacks be the way to go for this sound? I've got V30's and 75's but no greenies...yet :D

Rockstah over at the metro site had a great PPIMV that sounded amazing, so yes, I think that you can get a tone like that by using one but cranking it does add some extra magic IMHO lol

Greenbacks are definitely a must IMHO. Either old h30's or re-issue h30's or greenback 25's will get you that tone. 75's will sound to glassy, bright, shrill and scooped and v30's will be ear fatiquing IMHO.
Just for the record, I tried my Metro amp though all of the above speakers and for my liking, it sounded best withe greenies or h30's. You will be shocked by how much the speakers account for that tone

There is a mint Metro on TGP for $850 right now in the spam section, get on it boy

i'll definitely have to look into that PPIMV if i decide to take the leap for this amp.
Which Metro amp are you using and how do you like it?

what do you mean exactly by "the touch" steve? I am used to high gainers so this would be my first experience in the lower gain/rock realm. The reason i'm intrigued by this amp is because i've been noticing myself using less and less gain everytime i turn on my powerball or rectifier. I really want to get something that is just great for leads/soloing and also has some usable gain from 0-10. For my powerball, i find myself noticing the biggest change in gain between 0 and 4 (6 and 10 o'clock) - after that, it's just all the same to me.

What would be the heaviest kind of tones i could get out of an amp like this when boosting it? I don't need high gain since i have that covered, but some decent gain to get into 80's or even some hard rock stuff would be nice.

I know that question wasn't for me but I have a Metro 50 Watt Plexi and it sounds kickass. And just to show you how people's opinions vary, I hate the way that amp sounds through greenbacks. I bought a Marshall 1960AX loaded with gb's and the sound was piercing. I sold that cab immediately.  My broken in v30's sounded much, much better. That being said, I think h30's are probably the way to go. The high end in those speakers is so smooth it really works for the plexi style amps.

I'd give a 50 watter some consideration here, they sound great and will deliver the goods at more manageable volumes.
