He certainly likes top end, I'll give it that. If I remember properly, he had the presence on his Dual Rectifier cranked up to almost 2:00 on "Screaming Blue Murder".

He is probably borderline deaf /hard to hear high pitch. I can relate, the high pitch I hear is the constant ringing my ears. he is prob the same.

I've had all the 6L6 5153 versions. I did lots of A/Bing and the Stealth always had a little more color, IMHO. But they're just huge, heavy behemoths with too many knobs. I'm a Marshall guy these days, and usually with a Friedman BE-OD Deluxe out front.

I didn't even know Sykes still played guitar

In his recent days, he's mostly been interviewed at NAMM, saying stupid shit, showing that he is out of touch with reality
Like what?

John - "Don't follow anything unless it says 'Official' John Sykes"

Interviewer - "You know anyone can make a profile that says 'official', right?"

John - "Really? Aw man"

Basically, you can tell that he hasn't been involved in society since Turkeys were called "Walking Birds"

Friggin hilarious

Oh, hell no. Bad Boy Live tone is the shit...

It's a little thin and fuzzy for me. Palm mutes aren't even very distinct. I just don't get the love affair over that tone. Love Sykes, just never jived with the tone on that album... :dunno:

On the tour of Japan that produced the Bad Boy Live album, John took two Jose modded Marshalls and asked the promoters to supply Marshall cabs with certain speakers in them. I think he wanted Celestion 65's or 100's but I can't recall exactly. What he got were brand new 1960B cabs with Celestion 75's. The speakers were not broken in at all.

Add to that he thought the amps just sounded fuzzier and weaker running on the Japanese power compared to how they sound in the US.

I love the Bad Boy Live album and the guitar tones . I always thought the guitar was kinda buried in the mix on the Screaming Blue album

Have a listen to his tone on One Night Only, it's better than Bad Boy Live IMO

Had the 6L6 Stealth and could never bond with it. Just picked up a used EL34 50 Watt for $600 and it is better. Maybe it is because I tend to gravitate towards EL34 amps but I like the EL34 version better. The Stealth had "stupid" amounts of gain and the EL34 seems to have less gain on the Blue channel and the Red Channel seems to have a ton of gain just like the Stealth.

The EL34 50 Watt amps is one of those amps that is fun to play and gives that feeling of being real "slippery" under the fingers to get lots of harmonics. More modern voiced that is for sure but really easy and forgiving to play. You really don't have to work or dig in for what you get tone-wise. I get what others have said that these amps are missing something but I agree when these things are cranked and pushing 2 412 cabinets, the tone is thunderous.

I like to hit my amps with a boost out front to get the definition and clarity and with the EVH amps you really have to dial the gain back in order to use a boost out front.

Lots of amp for the money that is for sure.

That makes perfect sense and is probably what I'm hearing. He sounds great with the Jose Marshall, but the recorded tone on that particular album was always a little off from normal to me.

This has a ton of preamp gain which makes it sound thin and fizzy at times but once you crank it up and get some volume, this really thickens the tone up and takes away the adherent thin tone. Found on the 50 watt EL34 version the presence knob can really play a big part in the sound.

Pretty sure he preferred 65 watt speakers back then. Those are what were in his Wizard cabs

Yes, the Wizard cabs have 65's. His Marshall cabs back then has 100w speakers in them. He has obtained numerous Marshall cabs over the last few years and I have no idea what might be in those.

Thanks for sharing that information with us! Are you still working with John Sykes on being his guitar tech? I remember seeing you on the Huge Racks Inc. website and sharing some info on JS guitar rig. John Ou mentioned your connection with JS.

I've never been a guitar tech. I do still work with John, though.
