Just recently I learned about this concept of IR. I also stumbled across a huge collections of IRs for $15 called Recabinet. Listening to some examples, I was blown away. My mind is full of questions.

Can anyone shed some light on how IRs are created?
Is Recabinet a good deal?
Anyone have experience going this route for recording?

Go to http://www.audioease.com and watch their videos. They tell you how to create impulse responses.

Yes, Recabinet is VERY good for guitars. I have it and use it quite a bit when I don't have the luxury of using a mic. I also use it for writing purposes. It mates well with Pod Farm, Amplitube, Revalver and all of my amps.

Sounds awesome. So if I wanted to record straight out of a preamp, inside my DAW would I have to still use something like AmpliTube / Revalver?

Nope..... Just load up a plugin that can host the IR and you're set.

The popular plugins are Voxengo Boogex and Kefir which are both free

That's for Windows. For Mac, the free one is LA Convolver or something another like that. If you have Logic, Space Designer will load them up as well. I use LA Convolver most of the time.

Oops didn't know he was using a Mac. :) I would also look at the red wire impulses, more pricey than the recabinet but its one of the better ones available. Has tons of impulses per Cab different mics and distance and angle from speaker. Well worth the price if you are serious about trying IR's. I only started doing it recently and it's kind of awesome being able to get a decent tone without having to mic a loud amp. I still need to mess with it a lot more though

Yeah ... I have a G5 running PT 8. So does LA Convolver also supply the power amp stage? I guess I'm a bit confused.

IR's are just cabinet emulations. I never really found a difference including the power stage in the signal, I guess unless you are cranking the power stage. I think if you have a direct out on your amp that includes the power stage, but going FX send has only the preamp. I asked a question on this subject awhile back and got different answers, it seems people get good results using either method. I guess it probably depends on the amp and where it gets most of its tone from.

The way I do it is I take the line out from my hotplate (set to load) and just go straight to my interface and run the plugin on that channel.

Also on the plugin, make sure to set the mix to 100% or else some of the unprocessed signal comes through as well.

Where can I find LA Convolver? I've searched Google without much luck. Does it run as a RTAS plugin? Or as a VST?

Line out after power amp works best.. I used a hotplate out into redwire cabs greenback cab and it sounds pretty solid. Not sure it beats a real mic/cab but it will sound way better than a modeler!

Great thread. I used to use LA Convolver loaded in Garage Band (which works great), but have since switched to a Two Notes CAB -- it's just so easy to switch between cabs speakers and mics on the fly or by preset. It also operates seamlessly with Garage Band.

To the OP; definitely check out Ownhammer! They have a couple of free IRs too.

Gave up on trying to mic a cabinet....just can't get it loud enough to get a great tone while living in an apartment....so this thread got my contemplating IRs again.

If I have an attenuator built into my amp, how would I go about sending the power-amp signal to the interface? the attenuator has 3 cut levels (off (25watts), 1watt, 5watts, 10 watts, speaker off) and the amp has a compensated line out and a speaker out
What are line signal strengths BTW b/w pre-amp out (i.e. fx loop send) and power-amp out (i.e. speaker output)...ie. line level vs amp level?
Which signal strength does an interface prefer

unfortunately you have to play with the line out level and see what works best in your DAW. You'll know if it clips or if it is too weak.Use speaker off whick i would assume is a load setting. Make sure it is though.

I just played around with mine for a first time in a while with the line out from my hot plate... pretty damn solid! Doing some A/B with the 57 on my cab and in a way the IR was right on par if not more convenient and just as good sounding. Might cut a tad of the lows but it sounded really really good. The nice thing about IR is that it is all amp. No you aren't pushing air but someone else already has for you. I'd love to make my own impulse and compare it through the actual 57 and speaker that it was modeled after. I might just say screw the live cab for home recording.

I use NAIdr from Ignite amps. I gave up on amps for recording. Direct boxes only sound good with a speaker attached, which defeats the purpose of low volume recording. I have too much noise at my place (kid, heating system, humidifier etc...) I always get a god damn hiss when I record a cab with a mic. So, IR's and amp sims are getting very close. These Lepou plugins are as good as my Bias Desktop amps. Even better in some cases. Bias is good, but has way too many damn options. By the time you get a tone you like, you're ears are shot.

I also have a shitload of IR's that I use. All downloaded for free.

I use the LE456 for this tune below, with NaIdr IR loader with Marshall 1960A IR

The tune. I really like the tone here.

I only have the free redwire IR cab and it is awesome. What are some other free IR's? I will second the noise factor though..i don't think my place is that noisy but i still hear water, eletrical, a damn cutting board upstairs, my dog, and i have my cab surrounded by insulation panels and moving blanket to isolate it. It is hard to get away from the must mic cab to be hardcore thing but the IR's really have begun to be game changers. Dynamics aren't there perhaps but consistency over noise makes you think.
