Is Chicken Pickin the new tapping?

Tapping has been around a lot longer than guitar .... I believe it was in the 12th century two monks wrote out a ton of it for mandolin.

I rather listen to Chicken Pickin than tap any day. .... if you have not figured out you are a red neck yet I do not know what to tell you.

For me it's just about as annoying as tapping. Not a fan.

I have a soft spot for old hill country music and early country music in general, but I cannot listen to the garbage they call country music these days. Pop music with a drawl and an ocasional banjo or fiddle.

I respect the ability it takes to do it (chicken' pickin'), but it just grates on my ears.

Just an opinion. :aww:

I like dippin and i like whiskey but i suck at chicken pickin..!

However,,,, id love to learn how... Someone point me in the right direction:(

I kinda agree with A. Wood on this one, only I'm going to take it a little bit further.........

Andy Timmons is a "Rock-Blues-Jazzy-Shred-God" in my opinion, and my favorite "Musician" especially when it comes to "Depth & Soul" yet I still think he "Falls Short" when it comes to his incredibly technically accurate "Token Chikin' Pickin'" tunes.......On that same note, Brad Paisley in my opinion is the "Beethoven" of Country Guitar and though can play a fairly accurate Eric Johnson or Billy Gibbons countryfried, falls short in the long run...................

I guess what I'm trying to say is that, regardless of a musicians/guitarists technical ability, the true inspiration of their heart shines through, and that's what they are not only remembered for, but revered for, in the hearts and minds that they have touched....

IMHO, my opinion doesn't mean crap, I'm just bored and kinda drunk so I figured I'd post something.

Chicken Pickin is a lot like juggling, to be really good at it, ya either got it in ya, or ya dont. I don't tend to bash things I can't play, and therefore don't have anything negative to say.

its difficult enough (for me at least) to play well and sing...

Rock on Andy

I've been muddling around with a few chicken-pickin' inspired runs/licks for years - it's not trademark country music by any stretch, but it's there... I think for me it's a little more readily-accessible than tapping. By this I mean, my hands are where they ought to be to start with, it's just a matter of muting, and dumping the plectrum for a bit and having the nails. Tapping to me is useful in certain runs that 'bloom' with huge octave/key changes - they can sound really fantastic, but yes, I think MOST tapping in its day was a prerequisite for becoming a bonafide serious heavy guitar player   Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayzeus, the 80's man...every guitar store ya went into was littered with lil' bastards (I was one too!!) hanging onto the latest Vai endorsed grab-holed Ibby and just diddlin' away with no clue whatsoever on the necks. Screw actually STRUMMING, or, OH MY GAWD - SWEEPING/ARPEGGIOS - it was all about the neck = longer cock = girls panties to ankles.

At least, in our heads that's what we thought

I think that quote says it for a lot of us; we've all dedicated enough time to being somewhat great at guitar, but with all the distractions around us like personal relationships, jobs, (Rigtalk..heh) that to get to that next level of greatness is the chasm between me and the likes of Andy Wood and then beyond him to those who were lucky enough to market their talent and make it to the big show. I admit that I have an instructor, he's another one who's developed his skills to that of being tastefully fast and articulate, (also a fan of A. Wood) but Northern Michigan's live music scene is less than supportive of talent so he along with the rest of us, continue to struggle, which errodes at our creativity or desire to excell.

Nicely written. My reality is such that I know I'll never be a well paid musician, nor would I want to be I don't think. I mean, I'll jam, I'll perform, I'll make music solo or with others, but for me it's an artistic release - and something I want to get good at for my own reasons, not those listening. It's all about time management and priorization. Sure, I could dedicate 10 hours a day to playing, to chip away at the requisite 10,000 hours needed to become 'expert', but in the meantime, the mortgage goes to shit, my livelihood and clients decompose, my relationship with my wife and kids is gone, and I'm left being this 40+ year old curmudgeon who's locked himself away to be a 'perfectionist' on the guitar... And all for what?

Instead? I have a terrific life, and any time I want (for the most part), I can strap on a guitar, flick the switch on any number of beautiful sounding amps, and give 'er for hours... Ya, I want to improve, and in the New Year Mr. Carl Roa will be helping me do that, but it's strictly for personal and spiritual health and fitness. Andy Wood would kill me, as would Chubtone and the rest - but I'm not a 'musician' by trade, just an enthusiast (who's also managed to lend his ears on a lot of recordings of pretty well known artists because apparently, I've got good ears...whatever that means!).

Ah, whatever - back to work
