Is it just me, or are Marshall prices way out of line?

Theres more to it that - they just raised their prices.

Its a lot more expensive to make now, as while there assembled in the UK, most of the parts are from other countries. With the £ crashing it became (roughyl) 33% more expensive to buy the same thing from out of the country , so Marshall have to raise their prices by a similar % to make the same proffit themselves.

That said, the $ may not be worth what ot once was in some quarters, but actually the £ is worse, so it should be cheaper in the US that it was.

2007, exchange was £1 to $2. So - if the amo cost £1000 in the UK (which it didnt, just for demo) then the cost in the US would be $2000 plus shippin, import tax etc. Call is $2200. The £ then crashed to $1.50, but has since recovered a little to todays $1.58. So today, if the UK price was the same £1000 the us price would now be $1580 plus the same duty etc - total $1780 ish.

Ultimately, Marshall are going to raise their prices every year or so to account from inflation (as every company does pretty much - you wouldnt believe the uproar in the UK when Fender up their pricews a lot - and regularly), and together with the cost of importing the parts this more than offsets the saving due to the £/$.

Not standing up for Marshal here - Im not a fan at all, but its all driven by the cost to manufactur, plus £/$ rates. Over here for instance the JVM is around £1100 but a Dual Rec is £2000 - and a Bognor XTC 101b around £2400. Id wager the prices are much closer stateside for the same reasons.

Well said on all accounts! In Belfast are you? Just spent the last 5 weeks messing around Ireland.

I dont think marshall pricing is any worse than engl or most other brands, there alot of amps that are overpriced but as long as it sells it doesnt really matter.

Wow, that's way overpriced. I played a JVM 410 and there's no way its tone is worth that much.

Has Marshall produced a decent sounding amp since the Jubilee? IMHO, Marshall is living off of their legend. I haven't played anything that I thought was worth the price tag in almost a decade... The JVM, while a "decent" sounding amp, is not worth more than $1k, IMHO.

In Canada the JVM410H is $1675. Our dollar stayed stable as the US and UK tanked.

The weird bit is that the Canadian and US dollar are on par with each other, which should mean that our prices should be roughly the same (differences will occur due to differences in import tarrifs). Makes me wonder who's pocketing the $700 price difference?

Lots of pockets to fill.......

You'd cry if you knew how much it's cost Marshall to build and pissed knowing how much everyone else gets at each step before the end user

This statement can be made about any amp.

Exactly...beat me to it

Never played a JVM. Had some around locally, but at "boutique" prices... I figured why bother. I got my XTC in mint condition last year for $2200. Got my VHT Ultra Lead with road cause this spring for $1000. With prices like that (and even less in some cases)... it boggles the mind why someone would pay that kind of money for a stock Marshall. I don't think that modern Marshalls are "junk". But there's no way they're worth the new price they're asking. I'd pay like $700ish for a used DSL and be cool with that. Or in the mid-teens for a 1959RR. But that's about it.

BTW... I don't care what prices Marshall puts on their amps. It's a free market and I'm cool with the market making the decision about what value is there. I picked-up a mint Lead 12 SS combo last spring for $70 (used to own one years ago) and I love that little thing with my OCD in front of it -- and running into a JCM900 1960B cab. That's my daily practice rig. Big value! :D

Just buy a used JVM. There are 2 JVM410H's on the classifieds for $1000-1100. So the price hike by Marshall has so far not inflated the used prices from what I can see....

Well, about any crappy sounding amp, yes. :D

I think newer marshalls are extremely overpriced, considering the sh*t tone that you get.

marshalls are still made in the uk, only the lower entry level stuff like the mg series and some of the newer tube stuff like the haze are made in china. THe jvm, afd, all the vintage reissues, are still made in uk.

There are players who will pay $4K+ for a 4-channel PCB amp

Because PCB is inferior. Just ask Soldano, Bogner, Diezel, Mesa, Rivera, etc, etc, etc. ;)

It is mostly because they are made in England and imported. We have the same price problems with US made heads imported to England.

Here, where a JVM410 costs £950 / $1500 US, a Mesa Mark V head costs £2350 / $3700 US
