Is it me or does the EG5 sound like...

Nuno Bettencourt's tone on the Extreme III Sides To Every Story album... or Blues Saraceno's tone on Never Look Back album... or more of a "kaw kaw" sound? Is the tone I'm hearing comparable to a Soldano-esque tone?

I finally got a chance to play the MOD50 last night and spent some time tweaking in the EG5 module. This thing is straight out of the 80's mainstream rock! Not necessarily "hair band" rock per se but more like the comparisons I gave above. Anyway, I absolutely love this amp and the EG5 is absolutely brutal. I honestly can't see myself ever turning the gain up past 1 o'clock let alone putting a boost pedal in line. This thing has buckets of gain on tap!

However, I'm not 100% sure that the EG5 is for me. I've read some posts were people were saying that the EG5 can be made into more of an MHG by backing off on the mids and treble and I concur. But I'm not sure if this is the tone I'm looking for. You may have heard me mention a while back that I'm into more of a Boogie tone, and although I don't expect to nail the Boogie tone without actually buying a Boogie, I'd really like to come close. Because I could never give up the versatility of this amp. Switching to the BMAN is almost like switching to a totally separate amp. This is like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in a box.

So, in the opinion of the users of the Egnater forum, should I try the Erect or a different module? As I stated above, the EG5 has more gain than anyone would ever need so I have no doubt that the Erect would have enough. What would you suggest? I guess I don't have as a seasoned ear as some of you and sometimes clips of these modules all sound the same. I really wish I had a bunch of modules to compare.

The EG5 definitely has a Soldano type thing going on and the rhythm tracks on III Sides were recorded with a Soldano SuperLead 60 Series II . So no surprise there that they sound alike. With my N4 I can get dangerously close to that tone, except I dont quite have Nuno's hands.

But you are also right that it does not sound Mesa at all. If you like the sound of the Rectifiers, E-Rect is a great choice and definitely has that going on. It doesnt have as much gain as the EG5 (what does?) but it has plenty and is still definitely high gain. If you are more partial to the Mark Mesa tone, you can try COD but I dont think it will do what you are looking for. The only other option is waiting to see if the Egg tone chefs can cook up the much anticipated high gain Mark inspired module, "Super COD". Maybe you can convince Jeff to cancel is vacation and get that done for us?

I think it's funny you should post that..whenever I'm playing Either EG3/4 or EG5..I'm thinking Politicalimity or even back to Decadance Dance tone in my head...I can't play 'em for toffee but that's what my brain is thinking when I hear the chunk and almost acoustic like clarity in the gain of these modules...I like to palm mute a lot of stuff and break in and out of umuted notes...guess I subconciously picked this up from Nuno...I love the sound of it.

I don't have a Washburn N4 either..but I do have a Schecter Exotic....finished mahogany/maple cap....it sounds wonderful for this...all it needs is a Floyd :D

I love III Sides too...it's like a channelling of Queen, Hendrix and something else all rolled into one :D

I was going to suggest COD based purely on description but I don't think it has the gain you're looking for.

You're welcome to a loan on my Erect if you pay postage/insurance both ways....and you break it, you buy it ;)

...one more reason for me to get an EG5... just love the tone & playing on that album.

Isn't the MHG based on the Soldano sound? And the EG5 is a modified MHG.

Yeah, the EG5 has Soldano written all over it. I was telling Jeff today that it really brings out the metallic sound of my lower strings... almost like you can hear the strings slapping against the frets. I always classified that as a "loose" bottom end, but from what Jeff was saying, it's more of a characteristic of a "tight" bottom end. I'm wanting a more liquid sound when playing heaving chords, kind of like Metallica's Black Album. Would you consider that "loose?"

I'm not really sure if the Rectifier sound is what I'm after. I think it's more of a IIC+ or III. If the COD is closer to those tones, a Super COD is probably what I am looking for... at least for my lead tones.

That exactly what I was hearing when I first started playing through it.

Thank you for the offer but I have three modules on the way for me to audition.

Yeah, it's been in my car for about a week now. It's been years since I heard it last. Some really good riffs on it.

Basically the EG5 has much more midrange... which is what I think I don't like about it.

Mids down..treble to taste..sounds almost identical to my Randall Modern just a bit more natural feel to the tone :D

Ok, so I've spent the last couple of days messing around with this EG5 and I currently have it set to the following:

Bright: Off
Bass Boost: Off
Gain: 1 o'clock
Bass: 1 o'clock
Middle: 9 o'clock
Treble: 10 o'clock

By the looks of the middle and treble, I think I should try the MHG and see how it compares.

I have both the MHG and the EG5 and I wouldn't part with either of them. They are somewhat similar in that they have around the same amount of gain. I would say the EG5 (similar to Soldano) is voiced with more high mids whereas the MHG is voiced a little darker (Ecstacy 101B Red channel perhaps). If you are rolling back the mids and treble that much then it would probably be worth it to check out the MHG. You will like it but you will probably also want to keep both of them.

What's weird is that my wife was sleeping last night so I had the amp down so low that you had to be sitting almost directly in front of it to hear anything... and the EG5 sounded incredible. I guess I'm more of a "scooped" kind of guy.

The EG5 is my lead module, as I am also a scooped kind of guy.

Russo, what did you end up with? I upgraded my MHG to the EG5 because I read you could get the EG5 sounding pretty close to the MHG with the right EQ settings. I haven't quite been able to do that. Anyone???
I miss the thickness of the MHG but I got burried next to a Marshall DSL. However, every other time playi8ng that module live was great.

With the EG5, I can't get the gain past noon. I do like how percusive it is and tight....I wish the MHG had been like that. I also bought the SL2 hoping it could be dialed in to sound like the EG3/4. Ugh.

Rich, get the 3/4 and be done with it!
But then what would he talk about all day?

Hmmm, lets see...
1. What tubes are you guys using with your EG3/4?
2. Anybody use a boost with the EG3/4?
3. FS: EG5 or SL2
4. Digital sounds like crap, I like analog....

Jeff H told me he played "Lay it Down" 200 times while Bruce swapped components out in real time to come up with the EG5.

I played it when it just had "X" on the module. (July '07)

At that point, I knew I would get an M4 with that module at some point (Feb '08)
