Is it possible to convert a Fryette 2/50/2 into a 2/90/2?

I realize that this is a potentially stupid thing to ask. I honestly don't know the answer though. I'm sure if I wanted to spend a ridiculous amount of money...anything is possible. However, if it's a matter of replacing a few resistors, tubes, and capacitors; I feel like it might be worth me taking the time to do so. At this point, I don't own either unit. I hear such great things about the 2/90/2, but they simply don't get listed used nearly as much as the 2/50/2 does.

Just figured I'd get some expert opinions from other users. Feel free to tell me to shut up for asking something incredibly dumb.

i have not repaired or looked at either, im not familliar with the schematics of either model to be able to answer your question.

in short answer - anything is possible electronically. - just depends on layouts, voltages, and if there is a large revision between the two.

im sure someone has experience internally with each and can give you some insight.

how much electronics knowledge do you have though? if you have to ask?

I'm actually an electronics technician for a very large company. However, tube theory stopped being taught years ago, so I have pretty much no knowledge of the workings of most amplifiers. I can usually decipher schematics pretty well, but I don't see those floating around for high end gear very often.

if you are serious about this, then a few words of advice - you wont get far without schematics. best thing i would do is search the internet for a few sites that have schematics for power amplifiers simillar to them or ones that are already dual mono (stereo) and study them carefully for differences and likenesses.

educate yourself. books, other people, join a few technician forums, you do not need to be poking around modifying circuits that you have no clue how they operate. if you run into a problem, and you have no clue what is going on, you have a $1,000 paperweight and no way to fix it unless you pay someone else at $60/hr to decifer what you are wanting done.

you would not attempt to go to a firing range, blindfolded, and not knowing what a gun is. same applies here.

if it is not worth your time to do all of the above - just pay more for the 2/90 :)

My suggestion for converting a 2/50/2 into a 2/90/2 is to sell the 50 and buy the 90.

I have no desire to carry the 2150 around. It weighs almost as much as my ENGL SE.

Ive had both- but preferred the 2:50:2... EL34's sounded warmer and sweeter.

Better yet, buy this http://www.rig-talk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=65416
or this if you can swing it http://www.rig-talk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=64065
Honestly, I've owned all three and the 2150 is in a whole differnt league.

Do you know if it can be modded to use EL34s?

Don't know for sure but the VHT Classic 2100 uses EL34's.

I know and its my favorite power amp ever. I don't have 3k though and I don't feel like selling a kidney

This, you can put in an extra $200 and get a used 2/90/2 without f'n around with trying to convert it.
