So I haven't played with my UL since August. Last night I got together with the guys (minus our regular drummer) and while things sounded good, I'm still left wondering if this is the amp for me. I actually love the UL, killer cleans, great rhythm chan and awesome lead chan, plus I've got it tweaked as best I could, including having changed the power tubes to JJ's (which gave the amp some life) and Tung Sol's in the pre section. So what's a UL owner to do? What's the next move? Bogner? Diezel? I don't know. I just want to make sure if I do look at something else it has a killer clean, heavy rhythm and a lead chan that just sings for solos.

Help a brother out! Thanks!

Matt

You trade it to me for my ENGL SE  Otherwise, it could have just been an off day. I've experienced this many times due to temp, voltage, etc.. Hell, it was a different season last time you played it! Just a thought ;)

the new XTC anniv is very cool (at least Brad's was) for what you describe I also dig the H&K triamp MK 2, the Fender EVH 3, me personally never could bond with the VHT. You might also find that 2 channels will work with a pedal for solo's !

This screams Diezel to me. My Einstein fits this bill nicely.

Maybe a temperature/voltage thing, but I don't know. I'll say the UL's probably the best I've ever had, but there's also always been this lingering feeling that it's not "the one". It's close, but I don't know. I'm hoping it's just not some stupid case of GAS. I definitely don't want to make the wrong decision.

The bummer about where I live is you can't find a Bogner or Diezel anywhere. Seems I'm the only guy with a VHT around these parts for that matter.

I know the EVH 5150 III is not for me but thanks for the suggestion.

I seriously need to try a Diezel Herbert. Something tells me it's right up my alley.

Not with the VHT. Just some older tunes and a few demos on http://www.reverbnation.com/backroads

The newer material we're doing is heavier than what's on that profile. Similar to Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin and Shinedown.

Before the VHT I was gigging with Mesa's and in the studio I'd use a Dual Rec and 5150.

I really need to try a Herbert.

Listening to your music modded Marshall is what I think would suit you better.

If you are after the sounds of the above bands you said, then Herbert is right where you wanna go.

Yeah the old stuff would give off that vibe. In fact most of those tunes were recorded with my JCM800 and 5150.

The UL is very close to what I want, but I just need something to convince me.

Truthfully I gigged happily with the 5150 for a long time, but it had it's limitations. Went to Soldano for a bit, HR 50+, didn't do it for me. Switched to Mesa and was pretty happy. The VHT definitely has some of the best cleans I've had, not counting my studio amps (old Fenders), and the rhythm/lead is like a nice happy medium between the Mesa and 5150, but more pro sounding, very distinct.

If I could get something with a super clean that doesn't break up, a mean rhythm channel, and a lead chan that's thick and perfect for modern rock I'll be happy. I'm 90% there with the UL. I want to be 100%.

I haven't been through as much gear as a lot of guys on this forum but I've been through about 20+ amps in the last 3 years, Marshalls, Boogies, Soldanos, Peavey, 3 XTC's and I cant say enough about the Herbert I just bought! I will say it doesn't sound like other amps so its not going to be for everyone but I is just what I have been searching for and driving myself insane trying to find!!!!!

I'm sure you'll be happy with cleans, that's one thing I'm sure of. AS far as killer rythm & thick lead, it's definitely there too, but I can't tell whether you'll dig the voicing or not, way too far from a VHT. The only thing that I'm concerned is that Herbet's voicing might just be too big for what you do, it takes a lot of sonic space & could possibly just bury your singer if he is one of those nice singing type of guys. You won't be able to tell until you try it with your band.

I'd actually like something that took up a bit more space. I thought the UL stock sounded really 2D when I got it, so I did that tube swap and it helped quite a bit. I think in the lead sound I'm missing a bit of that gooshyness, that warp that i used to have with my 5150.

Man I wish there was a Herbert locally I could try. Closest would be someone in Toronto, 4 hour drive away, which isn't bad...I just don't know anyone there with a Herbert.

do what I did , get a soldano!

Had a Hot Rod 50 plus, wasn't my thing. You thinking I should try a SLO?

SLO is an awesome amp, FX loop sucks!! I'd still have mine if wasn't for the FX loop.
4 hour drive is a little tough. Real bad if you dont like the amp!!

You've gotta check out the Herbert. Really great, versatile amp. I like the VH4 too, but prefer the Herbert. It seems more modern sounding to me.

probably not if the hr50 wasnt the right sound as the slo will be similar, go for the diezel seems to be all the rage!

I like my Bogner Uberschall the most,as far as killer rhythm tone, the clean is weak, sounds like a 10 watt amp.
But the main heavy tone is my favorite by far,My Diezel VH4s is also a killer amp but it lacks something and i can't put my finger on it,maybe it's to compressed,or it might be to smooth, however it's the most versatile ive ever owned, great cleans to extreme metal, and channel 2 sounds awsome
for blues type stuff, nice breakup.Sounds like your looking for an all in one and that might be hard.
But an XTC might be what your looking for,a perfect world would be to try amps out at home and send back the ones you don't like, here in Detroit nobody sells Diezel, have to buy based off clips.

Best of luck to you in your search.

Hey Phrygian , Send me some tracks of you playing and I can "Reamp" threw my brand new Herbert with a Diezel 4X12 front loaded cab or the rear loaded cab your choice.

That would give you an idea. I'll record on Pro tools w/ 57 shure mic with NO pluggins or EQs.

Maybe play some clean stuff then some rockin riffs and some solos. I'll go threw the 3 channels/ some EQs setting and Mid cut option on the Herbert. Because I tell you the Herby is versitle as Hell with the EQs and Mid cut option on each channel. You can dial in about 40 or 50 sounds on it from Vibroverb/Hiwatt Gilmour Cleans to Plexi tones to 80s rock ala Jake E Lee Bark at the Moon tone to Godsmack/Hard rock all the way to Death Metal/core.

That way you can get the over all idea of the sound with you playing threw a Diezel Herbert and you don't have to drive 4hrs.

Thing about the Herbert is you could put it behind a wall where the player can't see what they are playing and they would think you had 5 or 6 killer amps mic'ed up back there. :m17:

Just let me know, the offer is there.
