Is there a delay that doesn't sound like an aluminum can?

Every delay I've used sounds like I'm either running my guitar through a computer into a pa, ie too processed, or like I'm playing guitar in an aluminum lined cave. Are there any that don't do this? Thanks.

Strymon Timeline and the Eventide TimeFactor.

No contest.

^ yeah that's what I was thinking about. Dunno how it would do with high gain though.

TC time factor so cheap and ok. I picked one up and it is pretty good. Time Factor is good.

Didn't like the carbon copy much. Need to list that thing on here in the classifieds....

Depends on how much money you want to spend. It will cost more than that MXR CC though.....

Having said that though, I always come back to my old Boss DD3. Hits hard with a good attack. Thing with the Carbon Copy and some more pricey delays - is that they are actually built to emulate a tape echo, or other vintage analog delays, hence the response you are getting. Try any digital delay and you will probably hear some difference.

When it comes to delays, less knobs is better....

I've had some digital delays and they either sounded really tinny or really digital. Likewise, I had a tc electronics hall of fame and got rid of it because it sounded too digital to me.

Warmest delay I have played owned is the SIB Echodrive. I think you would love it if you can find one. Simply, think of the chips used in delay pedals are as rare as nos tubes or germanium transistors. Once the factory closes down your out of luck. There are only so many good parts laying around that made their way into our guitar pedals.

We as musicians sometimes have to think outside the box and find stuff that works. Sounds like your looking for a dark delay. But I really need to know how many Ms of delay you need to advise you on a solution.

I don't have a specific ms in mind, but the range available on the carbon copy works fine for me right now.

Best delay I've ever heard/ played (and that includes my Strymon) is the Ibanez AD-230 analog delay that I just got rid of. Needed some pedals pretty badly so I dumped it but I will own another someday. As someone said above, it depends how much you want to spend, but if you're willing there are amazing delays out there! There's an AD-230 on the bay right now for a fair price.

By the way, how are you using the delay? I sometimes use a Carbon Copy in the fx loop of my mark iv and it sounds excellent. The Roadster has a good series loop if I'm not mistaken, so you should be able to get great sounds with that setup.

Holy fucking Moses, $900?! Yikes!

What kind of amp are you using, a Mesa Roadster? Are you using your current delay into the front of the amp? Are you are getting all your gain from your amp? Does the amp have an fx loop?

If you are using a pedal for distortion, put the delay after the gain box. If you are getting your gain right from your amp, put the delay in the fx loop. If you are getting your gain from your amp and your amp doesn't have a loop, then the solution to your question is more complicated.

So it sounds like a great delay is the same price as a multieffect unit.

Is there a multi effect under a grand that has the delay, verb, modulation that is as good as the better stand alone units?

Anything from a Boss DM-2, DD-3 Keeley modded or not, TC Nova series or the new usb ones, or pretty much any new delay. I haven't heard an aluminum can delay in decades....and those were old digital ones. The old analog ones were awesome and warm. This thread is so odd. You sure your "delay" doesn't say REVERB?

Tape or bucket .... pretty much all I use. I do have a few digital delays ... but the tone is OK at best.

Yeah the roadster. I've been putting it in front of the amp because I often find a volume drop with amps when using the effects loop. I also have a big muff that i put in front of the delay, but only use sometimes in conjunction with the tweed mode on channel one.

Yes, I used to have an old DOD digital delay and that was much much worse. But I can still hear a change in tone. Without the delay, the tone is pretty dimensional, nice thick bottom end, great mids, and a top end that I can dial in to have as much bite as I want. With the delay, I lose a lot of the chunk and it gets kind of thin and more trebly.
