Is there a delay that doesn't sound like an aluminum can?

Yeah the roadster. I've been putting it in front of the amp because I often find a volume drop with amps when using the effects loop. I also have a big muff that i put in front of the delay, but only use sometimes in conjunction with the tweed mode on channel one.

Put your delay pedal in the fx loop and adjust the send level knob on the back of the Roadster. No delay pedal sounds good in front of a gained up amp.

If you can find one in good condition and you don’t mind programming a Commodore 64. Otherwise my tc electronic g-force's (or tc g-major for that matter) dynamic delay runs the very same dynamic delay technology as the tc 2290.

I just went and tried that for about a half an hour. It kind of does the opposite thing that putting it in front does, which is it sucks out the high end. And for some reason, no matter where I put the send level, it cuts the volume alot on channel one, but only on channel one. The other channels I was able to adjust the send level so that my overall volume was the same as with the loop off, but i still lost gain and high end.

Edit: scratch that, it does it on all channels, just more pronounced on channel one for some reason. I can compensate for the volume drop with the solo boost, but the tone is still a lot muddier.

In my experience the "PT2395 (PTC)" isn't very reliable. Had the same chip in my Sears convection oven and it burned out after I cooked a full turkey.

I love my Carbon Copy analog delay. Very warm sounding, if you need to to be less warm, run it at 12volts.

A delay with a line or loop level switch, like the Eventide Time Facor will help.

If you had a small parallel mixer that worked at line level you could put any delay in the amp effects loop and mix it in with the raw amp sound.
No matter where you put the delay .... in front of amp or in effects loop it is going to color the sound some. This is true any time you add anything to the signal chain. No matter what it is.
Obviously some gear will color the sound much more than others....

TC Flashback. I tried it with many configurations and it never failed. I recently got a Timefactor, but the Flashback might get it off the board.

It handles instrument and line level, has kill dry and analog dry...

I like the echoplex setting on my Gmajor II. Kind of a waste to use it just for that but hey, don't feel like dropping cash on anything else right now. Still amazes me how on Friedman's board for Lynch, George apparently uses his strymon delay out front in front of his MArshalls, MArshas, insert flavor of the day amp here..

Every delay I've used sounds like I'm either running my guitar through a computer into a pa, ie too processed, or like I'm playing guitar in an aluminum lined cave. Are there any that don't do this? Thanks.

OP, it must have been some bad delays you tried. There are tons of good delays out there.
