Hey Dave (and all)-

I am looking for a good Marshall amp to have Brown Eyed!

1) How is the turn around time looking these days for mods?

2) Which amp would be better post-mod: '89 Marshall 4-input 1987, or reissue Plexi 1987,
older 2203/2204? Or, would they all come out like a Marsha, organic and yummy?

3) Would they all clean up with a turn of the guitar volume knob, or does that depend on the original circuit (Plexi vs. Master Volume)?

I've got B.E. fever, and the only perscription, is more B.E.!

Any of those will work great. Yes it cleans up well

I have never had an amp capable of fairly high gain that would also "clean-up" so well with the guitar volume pots....

It's amazing and I used to think my Cameron "Jose" Marshall cleaned-up pretty well this way! It took a while to get accustomed to the dynamics in this amp; it's not a fuzzy, super-saturated, super-compressed gain machine - even with the gain dimed - but stays very tight and punchy. At lower volumes, this characteristic is not as apparent, but after a few rehearsls at gig volume and a bunch of gigs, the Kitchen Sink Marshall is my go-to amp!

Ya really need to hit the speakers pretty good to get all this amp has to offer. I use the Scum Back M75-65HPs and they like a pretty good goosing to get the most out of them and make 'em sing.

It reminds me of my old VHT (now Fryette) Ultra Lead, not in tone/gain structure so much, but in how tight and percussive it stays with gain cranked AND is so articulate/accurate in the way it tracks your playing! It forces you to be a cleaner/more accurate player! Every little chirp/string swipe/snarf (or dare I say mistake?) is broadcasted over the airwaves for all to hear: "Hey! I just fucked up that riff!"

There's no hiding in the "slop" playing these amps....
