Is this an accurate clip of the Bogner XTC 20th?

I don't know if it's just the recording, but there's not a single note coming from this amp that I like. Is this typical of the 20th red channel?

I may just be my speakers. Sounds stiff and fizzy... I'll hook my Mac up to my mixer and give it another listen.

This guy also did a 100B demo. Compare the two, this is why I prefer the 100B.

Yeah, I love the 100B also. I had one, but sold it to a RT member a couple of years ago. My 55Hz 'Greenbacks' have been depressed ever since... :aww:

Yeah the 55s' sound great with the 100B. Looks like with the 20th he's using V30s' and the 100B he's using GBs'.

I think cranking the mids to 11 on any amp would sound boxy like that clip...he also has the more midrangey EL34 version and this amp was designed around 6L6 tubes, as there is plenty of mids already in the design. He is also using the loose excursion which I only like for lead playing or low volume playing, as it's more bloated in the low/low mids. So, no, I wouldn't say that's typical, at all...it's actually a very balanced amp.

sounds pretty good its got me gassing for a bogner

I wouldn't say this is horrible but it's the sound he was obviously going for. Sounds OK. I have a Classic and it sounds pretty damn good to me. I don't kick the mids that high but to each his own. I am also using an Uberkab with 2 emi wizards and 2 Veteran 30's in an X pattern. Not as much umph as the Uberschall but an extremely versatile amp none the less.

No! Bright switches on and mids cranked and treble at 2pm are not the best tones in this amp. Im ok with the loose settting, I like mine like that but as soon as you start over cranking the tone knobs I think it loses something. That and look at the way its mic'd up, sm57 pointing at the center cap. This is not representative of the tone I get from my 20th that's for sure.

I think I tried an Ecstasy years ago for like 5 minutes and then gave up due to how freaking complicated the amp is. :)

But I like both of the clips posted here and have been listening to clips all day on YouTube. I still can't figure out the difference between the 100A/B, 101B, Classic, and 20th Anniversary. 100A = 6L6? 100B = EL34? 101B is smoother and has more gain? Classic sits somewhere between the 100B and 101B? 20th Anni is something different altogether? I think so far, the best low-gain to mid-gain sounds have been the 100B and the best high-gain I've heard was the 20th Anni.

Your 20th sounds much better.

I owned the 20th Anniv 6L6 version. It is my favorite tube amp I have ever played/owned. Just great!

Here are a couple of recordings I did with it. The only amp I sold I would love to have back someday (although I will own a Henning Cherry Bomb first).

Blue Channel (Plexi setting):

Awesome! Are you using a pedal on the blue plexi setting?

No boost pedal. Just the built in boost function.

To the OP, the sounds in the original video are for sure easily attained with the 20thX, but it can sound, and DOES sound, a helluva lot better. It's not fully "representative" of the amp's champagne DNA, let's just put it that way.

Gibson's clips above are a much better take on what it can do

Your blue channel 'plexi' mode is the best I've heard from any XTC.

I need to check out Chad's clips, but to me the original YT clip sounded pretty good too. May be there's something wrong with my ears  ?

;).

EDITed:  Chad those clips :rawk: big time!
