I sold a guitar privately to a guy in QC with a value of 1600 U.S. and UPS has hit him up for $483 Canadian. What the F is going on with that. Wouldn’t duty just be recouping Canadian taxes?

Thanks, yeah…he didn’t mention that the 483 was Canadian so I was like what!!?. It wasn’t until I checked tracking on my end, it said it was in Canadian. So once I converted the guitar price to Canadian it made more sense. I hope it doesn’t frustrate him too much. Hell, I lost over 20 bucks with the PayPal transaction because I didn’t calculate in what they would charge on currency conversion. Totally on me. We both learned something on this one. It's 6% duty and just under 15% use tax. This is correct fees, but it's in Canadian dollars, so it's about $350 US.
If it's ever a bolt on, take the neck off and claim it's an educational build kit next time. Thanks, yeah…he didn’t mention that the 483 was Canadian so I was like what!!?. Duty and brokerage fees really suck, but it is what it is. If he's complaining about it, it's too bad for him, but he should have done his due diligence and looked into it before buying from outside Canada. Yeah, I don’t feel it’s on me. I certainly, in his shoes would have researched it before buying. It just surprised me too, the amount. He did get a great price on the guitar so hopefully that eases the blow for him. I originally got the guitar from Japan and paid about $75 in duty. I had got guitars from Japan before where I didn’t pay any duty, so either laws/policies changed or it’s more to do with the carrier. I paid duty on this guitar with them using Fed Ex but the times I didn’t pay, the seller used EMS.Duty and brokerage fees really suck, but it is what it is. The lesson is: never have high dollar stuff shipped via UPS. Always use USPS.
I think it comes down to where the item comes into country; I've paid no duty/customs fees on anything that comes to Chicago. Vs NY, where sometimes I do, sometimes I don't....Yeah, I don’t feel it’s on me. I certainly, in his shoes would have researched it before buying. It just surprised me too, the amount. He let me know the guitar got to him Ok and he’s happy so far. Very relieved it survived and I didn’t have to try and do a claim with UPS. I feel it was well packed so an impressive toss or drop would have been needed. I’m not sure I’ll ship to Canada again but now that I know what’s likely, I can lay it out for them so there’s no surprises. Also to calculate and add the PP fee for rate conversion..lol
Interesting. It was that guitar. But the numbers seem to bare out as if it was NA origin. I did Japan as country of origin when I did the paperwork. If it was that MIJ Gretsch you picked up recently it should have actually been a higher duty rate since it wasn't made in North America. The 6% duty is for NA only. IIRC it's 13-14% when made elsewhere + the 15% use tax. There will always be use tax, but the duty rate depends on country of origin and category.
Canada and Japan are part of a free trade agreement as of a few years back (TPP) so no duty on MIJ.If it was that MIJ Gretsch you picked up recently it should have actually been a higher duty rate since it wasn't made in North America.
