my 5150 III covers all of those requirements fairly well, and they dont go for a ton on ebay ... the cleans are by far better than any other 5150 they have made, and it is a true 3 channel amp as well .... just a thought

Actually.. I hadn't thought of that but the 5150 III is one of my all time favourite amps, possibly even in the top 5.. I played one and was amazed, I hear it has less gain than the Peaveys but does it do singing leads or are they very biting?

I think it may be out of budget, the Laney and the Ultra Plus aren't, not sure about MkIV, DEFINATELY the DAR

yah know as far as the less gain thing, i would say it isnt quite as harsh and raw but it has way more gain than i would suspect anyone could possibly need. i am a total gain freak and even i keep it backed off to about halfway, maybe at about 7 if i am feeling like going crazy. i actually just sold my 6505+ because everything it was capable of doing, the 5150 III better and it just sounded so much more refined. to me the gain of the 5150III is more like an uberschall type of gain. really high gain but tasteful and refined. you can get them used as low as 1K-1200 bucks.

i just recently put a 6l6/kt66 integrated quad into my 5153, and set the bias at about 40mA, and it totally woke the amp up. it sounds insane now. way more balanced and more focused IMO.

I was actually thinking about putting an integrated quad of that exact combination into my 5150 II, do you think it would fit? Another member here has that done to his 6505+ but I've also heard that kt66s are too tall, he said it cured some of the harsh mids, maybeI just need to try that? That should help the cleans as well. I'm in the United Kingdom though where EBay is shit for music equipment, good deals are few and far between.

So, it finally happens

I have been comparing my Mark III and 5150 A LOT lately. I plan to sell one of them.

I know what you mean, even though I dont play clean much. The Mark series is great at cleans and smooth leads, but modern brutal sounds are kind of a stretch. They do great at Metallica Black Album type sounds. I have been using a boost, but it is still missing something. You might wanna check these out, as it might be harsh enough for you. A Mark IV and a boost might be what you are looking for.

The 5150 mainly does that 1 mid-squakish heavy sound, but man, what a sound. It would probably be an easier decision if it wasn't fighting with my Recto, and I prefer the mids on the Recto.

Thanks for the input. :P yeah, finally happens, what do you reckon about an integrated quad of kt66/6l6

I love the raw, uncompromising sound of the 5150, I'm not a fan of Rectos because I don't like scooped amps, I like a fair bit of mids in my sound.

I'm located in the UK bud. =/

JSX is a great choice too.

Also, look into Carvin MTS3200...AMAZING clean channel, great reverb and great distortion!!

Get a Mesa Roadster, super versatile and great smooth leads, great chugg sound, and not fizzy like other rectos, and a lone star clean channel
:rawk:

I don't know, I like to keep the tubes in an amp is was designed to use ;)

What about a JSX? Or XXX? Those might have the Peavey sound you like, but with some other nice features.

I guess the first thing I would figure out, is what range of amps do you like? I mean like Bassy like Mesa, High mid like Marshall, etc...

You never know, you may end up wanting Marshall, and I know you can get a JVM over there for like $5

Engl are excellent for metal and every one of them has gorgeous cleans.

I've always heard praises about Framus' cleans too, and the Cobra in particular is a popular metal amp.

Lonestar clean channel is the only selling point the Roadster has over the Rectifier as far as I am concerned. They ruined the lead channel, way too squishy and scooped, even moreso than Dual Rectifiers are known to be.

No, you just have to set it up right, the vintage mode is great for leads, it adds more mids, and channel 3 is great for a rhythm channel. you just have to EQ it up right and not scoop the mids, it sounds really good with the mids at 12:00, It has very useable gain channels. It also is really good paired with the stilleto cab, The oversized cab makes the roadster too scooped.

What can you tell me about the Cobra? Vs 5150 II? I'll make a thread, seriously considering it.

The thought did cross my mind, the 5150 II has a killer lead channel and can do blues/classic rock but not cleans or super smooth leads.

How do the XXX and JSX compare to eachother and the 5150 II? They're all in Budget I believe. The JVMs are killer, the thought did cross my mind, but if I were going for that tone I'd probably go Splawn, though I've heard the JVMs are super versetile. Before I was seriously eying the 5150 series I did think about a DSL, sick sounding amps, couldn't do modern metal but I didn't get the chance to hear it boosted.

I haven't looked into Carvin amps though I hear the Legacy is sick. How come you ended up selling your JSX?

The HT100 has a superb clean channel.

Blackstar? I'm surprised because I thought the cleans on the HT5 weren't very desirable, though I guess we're talking about completely different valves and trannies and everything else.

What exactly do you mean by super smooth leads? Ever hear of a neck pickup? Or a tone knob?

I never dime my tone knob, and often do use the neck pickup, but the tone is always a little harsh in the mids, if I scoop it gets muddy.
