It may be time to trade in my 5150 II for a ....

If you are talking about smoothing out the pick attack then you could try running a fuzz pedal as a clean boost. No joke.

I hadn't thought about that, thanks. :) I learned Electric Gypsy by Andy Timmons and it always sounds harsh, I knew he uses a fuzz to play it but always assumed it was the amp. :) Thanks.

Ultra Plus 120 is a great amp, good gainy tones, good cleans.... Criticisms I had were footswitch buttons are waaaay to close together (and you have to use their footswitch) and there is a noticeable delay when switching channels (it isn't terrible but it is noticeable)

Rivera Knucklehead Tre.

Non master volume clean channel. Use loop levels to somewhat give it a master volume, kinda... Great old school clean. Gobs of clean headroom.

Sick beat down brutal high gain channel. Rivera web site says it is the highest gain lean channel they have ever done in an amp. You can put it on the high gain channel, put the gain on 1.5 of 10 and play classic rock. 6 or 7 is ultra high gain compressed metal. Gotta find one to play.

I have an OCD I use with the clean channel and have made it into a 3 channel amp. Fun amp. Feels like two different amps under one hood. Never had such a great metal amp and clean amp in one chassis. The Soldano Lucky 13 is kinda like it but the high gain channel on the Lucky is not voiced for the modern metal the Rivera is.

No hate on the Soldano's.... I have an SLO. Just different.

Have you considered a Cobra?

Cobra, for sure. I don't play metal, but if I did the Cobra or a 5150 would be my choice over Deizels, Bogner, Engl...I don't think it gets much better than a 5150/6505 for the brootz, but you need a clean channel.

Have you considered a Roland Jazz Chorus? It'd be another amp to haul around, but for ultra-clean in metal it wouldn't get any better than that.

You try turning the volume knob down on your guitar to clean up the sound?

Yeah man. :P Volume and tone, used a very slight, soft delay and a compressor, fucked with all of that stuff. :P

Yeah I did consider that, but I'd rather not have two amps, allthough I'd love something like that, or a Peavey classic 50 head.

You could always use the trick where you use a modeler, and run it into the power amp only. So, you get your amp sound, and then run the modeler through the power amp for clean sounds, bypassing the amp preamp.

Add a clean channel that way :D

Hmm, interesting, I know Rob Arnold of Chimaira does that. I'd like to hear more abuot the Cobra though.

A good alternative to an UL if you are on a budget would be a Baron K88. Custom built for around $1,500. I had one at the same time as my UL and it definitely could hang.

I think FJA makes a special cable that simplifies this setup; PODxt/x3 (or other modeler) into the effects loop -->power amp and makes it switchable.

EDIT

I was wrong; I was thinking of another cable. Nevermind.
